THAT's what it was.

My first thought was 'don't give up your day job, Shane', then I realised that he'd had to for a while, of course, and it filled me with a mixture of hope and dread.

Hope that he'd start playing cricket again as soon as possible and dread that he would eventually retire and take up commentating full time.
