Good on you! I disagree but hey, this is what discussions are all about.

As I said before, I think Akmal looks fantastic (as a 'keeper and a batsman) but it's far too early to put him anywhere near Gilchrist yet.
Exactly.

Remeber, Parthiv Patel looked very good in his first few tests.

That was probably cus he was hyped up by the Indain fan, not because he was that impressive. I wasn't on this form when he started but most my cricket mates thought his keeping wasn't up to Test standard, except my Indian mates.

Akmal is the best keeper to spin bowling, Sangakkara makes too many mistakes aganist Murali to be put that high. Also Mashud would be one of the best keeper to spin bowling, out of the current lot. My order for spin bowling would be:
1. Akmal
2. Mushud
3. Gilchrist
4. Sangakkara
5. Taibu
6-8. Karthik, McCulllum, Boucher
9-10. Browne and Jones

McCullum and Boucher are a lot better than that

Whatever it takes!!!
One thing that should be kept in mind while discussing wicket keepers is the make up of their respective bowling sides. For instance, a Boucher or a McCullum may never have a world class matchwinning spinner coming through from their sides ( a la Murali or Warne or Kumble) and therefore, don't really need to be great keepers of spin. They can only prove themselves by keeping to the bowlers that get picked for their sides and in that regard, I think both guys have acquitted themselves as well as they could. To say that these guys can't keep to spinners is not fair as they have never had the opportunity to keep to quality spinners. IN the same way, you can always argue that any Indian keeper cannot keep to express fast bowlers, because the Kirmanis, the Mores, the Mongias and the Patels and the Kaarthicks will perhaps never have such an opportunity to keep to an express pace bowler. A captain is only as good as his team and a keeper can only prove himself by keeping to the bowlers that his side has. On that note, my rating would be:

Gilly

Boucher

Mashud

Akmal

Taibu and McCullum and Sangakkara

Jones and Kaarthick

Browne

I suppose you can, but the thing is, he is not AS difficult to keep to as, say a Murali or Kumble or Warne.... That was what I tried to mean..... Plus, Vettori is definitely a good spinner but I am not so sure about him as a consistent match winner.

I reckon McCullum keeps better to Vettori then he does to the seamers. McCullum is a little inconsistent with the gloves..he'll take a couple of blinders and then mess up an easy one, but I think he'll get better. Batting wise, he's got alot of potential yet to be seen.

I cannot believe some people suggest Gilchrist is an average keeper. If you ask me, going by whoelse there is around the world..Gilchrist is easily in the top 3. He has to keep to Warne who turns the ball sideways at times and he's got Lee bowling at 160 km's at times..not to mention McGrath consistently beating the bat. I think he does a very good job.

He arguably cost at least 1 win in SA.
And how many Test matches did England win in a row while Read or Foster were keeper. He may not be the main factor in their victories but the balance he adds to the side is a main factor

If we're talking pure wicket-keeping, I'd put Taibu well up. I used to have a read 'downer' on Gilchrist as a keeper, but since England included Jones in their test side, I realise that the Aussies don't know how lucky they are (or rather reading this thread they do). His batting is such a huge bonus though, if he dropped a catch an innings he'd still be in credit.

Chris Read's a far, far better gloveman than Jones and if he doesn't start in the Ashes it'll be a travesty
.
McCullum, Sangakkara, Boucher are all much of a muchness.

So, if push comes to shove, on pure keeping ability, Taibu top and you take your pick over the next four. If you include batting prowess, Gilly by a fair way. If you allow players who are currently 'resting between call-ups', then Chris Read takes it - just.

What is the relevance of a period when the side as a whole was weaker?

As above. Equally good cases can be made for either with neither coming out the clear winner in my opinion. Your mileage my vary but again, not evidence of a bias at all. In fact, I'm puzzled why you would bring this up at all; it's not a ridiculous opinion to hold and is certainly justifiable, as many others have done.
this is an absolute joke..... dravid beats ponting in almost every category possible. from year by year consistency, to team by team consistency, to performances on all wickets, to the fact that even kaspa can bat better than ponting in india, to their career test average. anyone who claims that ponting is an equal to dravid is on a very short rope.
