Those CW members who are reluctant to acknowledge Barry Richards as an ATG due to how few Tests he played should look at his performances in WSC when facing the likes of Roberts, Holding, Garner and Lillee. Averaging almost 80 (in a competition in which only Viv Ricards and Greg Chappell were the only others to average over 50) speaks volumes.
If the player is south african. I'd rather see how he's fait against Chandrashekar and Prasanna on a Indian track. Aussie conditions are like second home for South Africans.

.... and how would those Indian bowlers have fared bowling against a line-up including Richards, Pollock et a in a series in SA?

Looking at what Kumble has done in his first series and Murali in SAF, I'd say Chandra and Prasanna would have given a run for their money. And possibly other than for Chandra we don't rate them as ATG.

Bring them against Murali and Warne on any surface, even ATG SAF batting lineups will find them selves wanting.

I see some of the comments writing that Chappell skipped tours.Well it's half truth on it but you have to see the circumstances why he didn't played those games.
He skipped only 2 tours i.e Ashes in England 1981 and Pakistan in 1982 while rest of them were either he was busy playing in Packer and other getting suspended by ACB to those who were playing Packer and those tours were WestIndies tour 1978 and India tour 1979.

Same goes to Lillee as well.
