World Eleven for ICC Super series V Australia

Slow Love™

International Captain
Some of the sides here look pretty good.... But why is Lara being preferred as captain to players such as Ganguly, Fleming and Vaughan?

(When they're also mentioned in the side, that is...)

What a shame cricket has to think-up gimmicks like this Rest-Of rubbish to compensate for so much lopsided cricket.
Anyone with any real claim to entry into ROW XIs will inevitably be very disappointed (and let's face it - there are plenty who've got no better or worse cases than plenty others) in their lack of selection, given the "officialised" status of this stuff.
And finally, some of these selections beggar belief. That Graeme Smith's omission could even be considered from any First-Class side in The World truly shows how much some people know.

Find it strange that no-one's picking Sehwag in the test side. Mine would be:

Sehwag
Smith
Dravid
Lara
Kallis
Thorpe
Flintoff
Pollock
Taibu
Murali
Harmison

Reserves:

Laxman, Tendulkar, Oram, McCullum, Pathan, Kumble

 Classic mate, classic. Thorpe ahead of SRT. Hilarious. :)

World Series hindered, not helped, cricket.
And yes, the 1970 Eng-ROW XI games helped in a time of desperate need, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Not half as strange as I find it that most of these opening combinations have been given with the openers facing second that would, by all logical deduction, face first!

oram will be in the odi team on current form. this year he is the no 1 or no2 bowler in the wolrd average wise, and the no 1 bowler rpo wise

I was looking at form (though I appreciate Sachin turned his round in the new year) and his position in the side (I'd give Dravid, Lara & Kallis the edge at 3-5). I'm not claiming Thorpe's a better player, but he's a nice man to have if you need someone to dig in at 6.

It would be a bit dull if we were just picking the established stars or basing selections purely on averages.

Is that really such a big deal?

Not a massive deal, but it's something I'd think people would be able to get right.

Not really, facing first and second might appear trivial but it's still one of the most everyday aspects of cricket.

ICC has announced a Super series to be held between a World Eleven and the top Test and ODI team, which bar any surprising results over the next year will be Australia. Here is my selection for the Test Team and ODI Team. This is based on current form and obviously may be different at the time of selection in April/May 2005.
And as such, what's the point picking something now when it's liable to change for the significant time.

Test XI

Vaughan (c)
Gibbs
Dravid
Tendulkar
Lara
Laxman
Sangakarra (wk)
Pollock
Harmison
Murali (if unavailable, then Kumble)
Bond (if unfit, Akhtar)

Reserve: Akhtar, Kumble, Vaas, Kallis, Inzamam

ODI XI

Tendulkar
Sehwag
Ganguly (c)
Lara
Kallis
Dravid
Flintoff
Pollock
Harmison
Bond (reserve Vaas)
Murali (reserve Harbhajan)

Reserve: Yuvraj, Gibbs, Vaas, Harbhajan, Akhtar

Unlucky exclusions: Graeme Smith, Sarwan, Fleming. I considered Sehwag a better option to Gibbs, just to include an all-out dasher (which Gibbs could be as well). And Yuvraj to be a replacement as a finisher to innings. I don't wish to get into a debate as to who is a better finisher (Sarwan ? etc) I would hv picked Cairns, bu not sure if he would be playing by then.

No Tendulkar !!!! but Thorpe/Sehwag/Smith make it ???
Taibu over Sangakarra/Boucher/McCullum/Jacobs/Jones/Moin (he might not play that long) thats some selection .....

1/ It really is not an important issue, an opener is made to face the opening bowling, face first. If the batsmen selected can't face first, then they shouldn't be in the side.

2/ Most sides rotate first strike.

World Series did not hinder cricket AT ALL. You of all people should know that.
