Well I have decided to create a best XI of every World Cup. Some of my selections may be controversial and I have dared myself to put these in batting order. The batting order is determined by mainly stats of players in the particular World Cup and its not based on career stats. After I have posted my teams, I’ll say which World Cup XI side (according to ODI career stats up to the particular World Cup) is the best.

1975 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Glenn Turner (New Zealand)
Majid Khan (Pakistan)
Dennis Amiss (England)
Keith Fletcher (England)
Ross Edwards (Australia)
(C) Clive Lloyd (West Indies)
Chris Old (England)
(wk) Rodney Marsh (Australia)
Bernard Julien (West Indies)
Keith Boyce (West Indies)
John Snow (England)

12th Man: Tony Greig (England)

1979 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Viv Richards (West Indies)
Gordon Greenidge (West Indies)
Glenn Turner (New Zealand)
Graham Gooch (England)
Andrew Hilditch (Australia)
(C) Clive Lloyd (West Indies)
Asif Iqbal (Pakistan)
Brian McKechnie (New Zealand)
(wk) Deryck Murray (West Indies)
Mike Hendrick (England)
Michael Holding (West Indies)

12th Man: Chris Old (England)

1983 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

David Gower (England)
Viv Richards (West Indies)
Graeme Fowler (England)
(C) Imran Khan (Pakistan)
Zaheer Abbas (Pakistan)
Allan Lamb (England)
Madan Lal (India)
Richard Hadlee (New Zealand)
Roger Binny (India)
Ashantha De Mel (Sri Lanka)
(wk) Jeff Dujon (West Indies)

12th Man: Malcolm Marshall (West Indies)

1987 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Viv Richards (West Indies)
Geoff Marsh (Australia)
Graham Gooch (England)
David Boon (Australia)
Allan Lamb (England)
Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)
(C) Imran Khan (Pakistan)
(wk) Greg Dyer (Australia)
Craig McDermott (Australia)
Patrick Patterson (West Indies)
Maninder Singh (India)

12th Man: Eddie Hemmings (England)

1992 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Martin Crowe (New Zealand)
Peter Kirsten (South Africa)
(C) Javed Miandad (Pakistan)
Rameez Raja (Pakistan)
David Boon (Australia)
Brian Lara (West Indies)
Ian Botham (England)
(wk) Dave Richardson (South Africa)
Wasim Akram (Pakistan)
Chris Harris (New Zealand)
Mushtaq Ahmed (Pakistan)

12th Man: Manoj Prabhakar (India)

1996 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Sachin Tendulkar (India)
(C) Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka)
Mark Waugh (Australia)
Saeed Anwar (Pakistan)
Gary Kirsten (South Africa)
Andrew Hudson (South Africa)
Paul Strang (Zimbabwe)
(wk) Ian Healy (Australia)
Anil Kumble (India)
Waqar Younis (Pakistan)
Damien Fleming (Australia)

12th Man: Roger Harper (West Indies)

1999 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

(C) Steve Waugh (Australia)
Rahul Dravid (India)
Sourav Ganguly (India)
Roger Twose (New Zealand)
Lance Klusener (South Africa)
(wk) Moin Khan (Pakistan)
Tom Moody (Australia)
Shane Warne (Australia)
Allan Donald (South Africa)
Glenn McGrath (Australia)
Geoff Allott (New Zealand)

12th Man: Saqlain Mushtaq (Pakistan)

2003 ICC World Cup Team (in batting order)

Sachin Tendulkar (India)
Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa)
Sourav Ganguly (India)
(C) Ricky Ponting (Australia)
Damien Martyn (Australia)
Marvan Atapattu (Sri Lanka)
(wk) Adam Gilchrist (Australia)
Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka)
Andy Bichel (Australia)
Brett Lee (Australia)
Glenn McGrath (Australia)

12th Man: Shane Bond (New Zealand)

IMO after looking at the sides, I feel the 2003 ICC World Cup XI is the best overall.

Also IMO I feel that Viv Richards is one of the best World Cup players.

For one im surprised that there is no Kapil Dev in the 1983 squad, when he clearly one of India's most instrumental players in their successes.

Other than that, there's some pretty good squads.

The not picking a true XI makes it a bit confusing to me - would've preferred to see 2 openers, 3 top order, All Rounder, Keeper and 4 bowlers (or some other make-up)

My make up for the sides is six batsmen (regardless of where they batted), keeper and four bowlers

Surprising to see that there's no Man of the series-Mohinder Amarnath or Kapil Dev in the 1983 team.

Werent Lillee & Thommo around in 1975? I thought Aus were favourites for that world cup, followed by Windies, so how come theres more pommies than Windies or Aussies?

Welcome to CW Pace Setter,

These sides were based on performances at the respective World Cups. I felt that whilst the West Indies won the 1975 World Cup, there were IMO more England players (individually) than West Indies players who performed well at the 1975 World Cup.

Remember that this was the first World Cup and even ODI's were very new at this stage.

Though my 1979 side is dominated by West Indian players (five) & my 2003 side is even more dominated by Australian players (and so it should be considering Australia was undefeated and in the process tore their oppostition to pieces :D) with six in the side.

IMO it basically goes in chronological order - 1975 was the best, 1979 second... etc.
1983 is an anomaly, it comes in second-last. 1999 also comes before the 1996 event. And 1987 comes after 1999.
The 2003 World Cup must surely be the worst on record, nothing will ever change my opinion on that.

Richard..how do you know...you dont appear to have been born for the first 3 world cups, and I doubt you have much by way of memory of the 87 or 92 world cups.

Ever heard of video footage?
And the 1992 World Cup was what first attracted me to the game.

Swervy, Richard knows everything, surely you must know that by now?!
No-one knows everything, but I do tend to research on the matters I comment upon. It does help.
Sometimes I comment in order to do research.

Out of my sides, these are my rankings:

No.1: 2003 XI (by far)
No.2: 1999 XI
No.3: 1996 XI
No.4: 1992 XI
No.5: 1975 XI
No.6: 1983 XI
=No.7: 1979 & 1987 XI's

It was close between the '99, '96 & '92 XI's

Interestingly enough, one Ridley Jacobs scored just 37 runs less than Moin Khan in 5 less innings with the same number of NOs and an average of 102.5 as compared to Moin's 34.57.

Added to that he caught 14 as compared to Moin's 12.
