Women's football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Bizarre that the qualification path means that the Euro champions and WC runners up are probably missing out.
If you're going to miss out on a football tournament, may as well be this one. The players will probably need a break and will keep them fresher for the Euros the following year.

If you ever doubt the use of VAR, then the Real Madrid/Chelsea match last night would quickly change your view. A penalty given for a trip at least 2 yards outside the box (she managed to slide in) followed by a winner ruled out for offside when she was a good 2 yards on.

Can see why Hayes was fuming, joke refereeing.
all the people crying over VAR have forgotten the days of such scandalous decisions

as always its the humans that are incompetent and not the technology

I can't imagine any self respecting Scot rolling over against the Auld Enemy, even with a place at the Olympics on the line. Forget about UEFA, what would their families, friends and fellow Scots do!?

Perhaps an odd 'staunch' Rangers supporter might think that way, but even so!

Well, they're going for it. Be funny if there was the suspicion of collusion today then Team GB select a second string squad next year.

While reading about the failure to qualify I really wasn't getting an answer about why only one of England and Netherlands could when they're both clearly among the best sides in the world

Turns out there's only two qualifying places (plus one for hosts France) for European teams out of 12, when the last two world cups have had 5/8 and 7/8 European sides contest the quarter finals. The format guarantees that at least 3 of the top 6 ranked teams in the world won't play

The Women's Football Olympics used to be an important tournament, but the World Cup and Euros have grown so much that they've become a far less significant event. I think it's a good thing they haven't qualified, get a proper Summer off and then be much fresher for the Euros the following one. The French and Spanish in particular may well be broken by then (depending on who they select for the Olympics I guess).

England were good last night and should've won by a lot more, the bigger question is why they were so abject earlier in the tournament. 2-0 up at home to Scotland at h/t and only winning 2-1, losing in Belgium etc etc. I suspect it was post World Cup fatigue and further emphasises why a break next Summer will do them good.

There was definite WC fatigue. Not just physical but I think they were emotionally broken from the final loss.
Yup. tbf when you're 4-0 up after 49 minutes, you really shouldn't have to wait another 40+ to score your fifth and final goal.
I'm not really sure it's fair criticism. The side won 6-0 away from home and while the Scots aren't the strongest, they're far from hopeless. It's hard to maintain that level of dominance over an opponent.

From what I saw, England looked a lot leggier in the last part of the game. Even so it is tough to be critical of them for yesterday.

But I think the players will feel that having got where they'd got to after 49 minutes. For some reason the performance tailed off a bit for much of the second half although, tbh, Scotland did improve. Obviously they'd have taken 6-0 beforehand.

Yeah, and the subs struggled to make an impact. James was a lot less influential in the second half, maybe because the Scots made a better job of closing her down.

Yeah, but if you're relying on a 7-0 victory to qualify, the problem lies in what you failed to do in earlier games.
