The ODI ATG type threads never go well but this has exceeded expectations.

- Bevan over/underrating
- Murali chucker
- Cheating Australian bias/sensitivity
- Migara defensiveness
- sunilz trolling
- Burgey's obsession with WC finals

All in less than 24 hours

Just need Stephen to suggest Symonds as a 5th bowler and PFK to bring up Kapil's batting SR and we'd have ticked all the boxes.

Think Murali is a fair call for 00s all though Brett Lee's numbers are amazing from that period. All of Ponting, McGrath and Gilchrist hold good cases too. At the end of the day guess it's all objective and depends on who you consider the most influential.

Personally I'd have gone for Ponting. Most runs and hundreds as a player, two world cups as a captain (that too unbeaten), big hundred in a final, two champions trophies, bilateral series wins in India and I'm sure there are many more. Felt he always rose to the big occasion

Tendulkar, Bevan and Wasim all very close for the 90s. Not educated enough to comment on the 80s though

Bolo.

International Captain
Guess it's also about the weight of absolute numbers and not just average/econ. Garner took less wickets than many bowlers in the 80s while Murali took the most in the 00s.
Guess its a reasonable factor, its just a question of how much you weigh it.

Pollock did more bowling than murali as well, but by barely anything, while Garner played a lot less than Kapil

Pap Finn Keighl

International Debutant
For score 0 against SL and BAN in 2007 WC.
Bevan atleast played crucial knock in 1996 and 99 WC SF. Dhoni was failure in the only WC he played in 00s
Dhoni is a WC failure compared to Bevan
Bevan is a WC failure compared to Sachin and Akram.

Outside WC
Bevan = Bevan
Dhoni = Bevan + attacking ability +WK skills

no stop being obtuse
Okay, in my opinion. 0-35 or 1-42 back then which the likes of Larsen and Harris would get was better than 3-55 in the 90s, although the latter was better for averages.

They were NZ's best ODI bowlers between Hadlee and Bond although their bowling averages are far worse than the likes of Chris Pringle, Danny Morrison, Geoff Allott, and Dion Nash etc.

Top 6 players who bowled in over 100 ODIs in the 90s, by economy rate:
Ambrose 3.48
Larsen 3.76
Walsh 3.81
Wasim 3.85
McGrath 4.01
Donald 4.04

Lots of tripe in this thread.

In the 90s, Bevan was clearly the standout batsman.
- He averaged 13 higher than the next best batsman.
- His nearest rival, Tendulkar, in the 90s didn't average over 40 in a single continent other than Asia
- Bevan's strike rate in the first innings was higher than Tendulkar's first innings strike rate (Tendulkar's was higher in the second innings but that doesn't really matter since Bevan won games chasing)
- Against the 3 best pace attacks of the 90s, Pakistan, South Africa and the West Indies, Bevan averaged 68, 52 and 70. Tendulkar averaged 39, 27 and 38.
- Runs per innings, which is often used to "discredit" Bevan's average was 37 for Bevan and 39 for Tendulkar. Nothing, given their different roles. By comparison, the average opening RPI was 31 and the average middle order RPI (4-6) was 26. So Bevan was 9 RPI above average and Tendulkar 8 RPI above average.

It's fair to argue that Tendulkar had a better overall career than Bevan, but in the 90s Bevan was the best batsman in the world and the gap isn't close.

McGrath vs Murali in the 00s is much closer.

McGrath wins it due to world cup performances IMO. There really wasn't anyone better on the big stage. Murali was poor against Australia in the era in question (averaging 31 against them). But sure, arguing for him isn't absurd.

Kapil vs Garner (Richards excluded because he wins it for the 70s) is close. Garner clearly the better bowler, Kapil possibly the more impactful player. It really is a coin flip here. I will change my mind on this one though and say Kapil edges it, mostly because he was so important in the 83 WC.

Also, McDermott was a fantastic ODI bowler who is underrated because he wasn't as consistent in tests and was overshadowed by his successors. I'm not arguing he should be in consideration for any of these, but don't be casting shade on McDermott.
