I would love to see what will be said about Perfect Pat this time next year. I am not impressed at him selling Langer down the river there in the interview. And if England's current travails teaches anyone one thing, it should be that too much player power is never good. I dont think he will be as bad as Anderson and Broad as a person but power corrupts. :)
I think this is, uh, imaginative.

I think England's current travails are a lesson that picking **** batsmen who can't catch is bad for winning Test matches, mostly.

Think Australia are in a pretty good space heading to their subcontinent tours.

I don't think they are a great side in the making ala Australia 1999 but they could certainly have success in the next two years culminating in a wtc championship win in 2023.

The big target of course is winning back the border gavaskar trophy in 2023. If they did that that would quite some achievement.

A lot of questions will be answered in the next set of tours.

Hiw good is Labuschagne really ?
Is Smith really past his best or is his loss of form just a blip ?
Can Hazlewood and Starc be effective away from home ?
Can Lyon and Swepson outbowl their subcontinental counterparts ?
Is Cam Green the real deal or Watto version 2 ?
Can Burgey make balanced, sensible comments and be civil :) ?

Starc definitely has the tools to be a threat in the SC with the old ball. Hazelwood too, but I thought he was disappointing on the 2017 tour. Labuschagne's game vs spin looks quite promising so he could be a huge upgrade on the guys they had on previous tours.

I don't really see why we should only speculate one way if things change in hypotheticals? I don't think I've been unreasonable here.
I beseech you, please read the posts you are replying to, and indeed read your own post. Shami's injury had no impact whatsoever on who wins that game at Adelaide.

My extremely hot take is that they should seriously consider bumping Jhye above Hazlewood in the pace pecking order on certain subcontinent pitches. No slight on him whatsoever, he's just not that suited to those decks IMO, whereas Jhye well could be.

Yup I think Jhye might be a better bet on the subcontinent than Starc or Haze.

I'm not convinced about Starc. He has the speed which you need for success on the subcontinent but he strays a bit too much on the leg side _ can get away with that on quicker bouncier wickets but you'll be milked for runs in India doing that.

You can't forget Starc's batting in that consideration, he's made useful runs in India before.

Nah they wasted quite a few good years of the ones they did have. Which might have helped the others mature before they got thrust in.

And sure, I am not saying it is a popular take but it is just what I feel. I mean, for all I know, Langer has been so poor that Pat is justified here. But I am just not a fan of a captain not showing a bit of class there when he had nothing to lose.

I'd honestly be surprised, and disappointed, if anything was meant by it other than that he didn't want to bother thinking about it at that moment. Media certainly has run with it though.

Nah.. when a direct question is asked about the coach, the easiest thing when u r 3-0 up in a 5 test series is to say "yeah they have done a great job too" and then move on, or maybe say what he said after that. The fact that he did not even think of saying something nice definitely shows it was pretty deliberate.

He wasn't asked about that though. He was asked about whether Langer's contact should be renewed, which is a bit more of a loaded question.

Yes, and I meant, he could have led with something nice about what they have done this series. He could have said everything he said after one word that was complimentary about him. Anyways, you could be right and I may well be reading it wrong but it just does not show a very good relationship, at least to me. That is all.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what transpires after the series on that front, let's just say.
