Why short form of Pakistani gets censored

TBF the biggest insult one can call anyone in English is an Anglo-Saxonism for the female genitlia (c-word). What does that say about the language?

This is a joke. The person that would be offended by the slur is arguing for it and the people who would (not accusing, just for the sake of my point) use it to offend are arguing for it to stay censored.

It's really a term of endearment here in Australia. All my mates are ****s.

He isn't from England, so he's not really in the group that would be.

To be honest, I don't like much of the language censorship in general, though I accept it because it's done at forums everywhere. I wouldn't necessarily mind words not being censored if the moderators were prompt to take care of people slinging racial epiphets or whatever. But most forum administrators censor the words because it's less work to do, and I understand that.

Point is that in some black circles, ni**er is OK (and Samuel Jackson says it at least 70 times in every film he's in), but we all understand how the word can be used. Pak* doesn't have as long a history, I guess, but certainly many south-east Asians in the UK (or, as Brumby mentioned, other ethnic groups that get blurred with them) would have experienced it as a form of racial abuse.

Anyhow, Pak is one letter shorter, so it's not really much of an inconvenience for the sake of those that would be offended, IMO.

From wikctionary:

The word Pakistan was created in 1933 by Rahmat Ali Chaudhry, a Cambridge law student, to refer to the independence movement that existed prior to the British decolonisation project of ex-London law students. It derives from the Urdu words for "pure country". However, the abbreviation **** acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to decolonisational subjects in a derogotary and racist manner. In modern British usage "****" is typically used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians and Bangladeshis. In recent times there has been a trend by second- and third-generation British Pakistanis to reclaim the word, such as in the name of the clothing company PAK1 or the independent refugee television news agency ****.tv.

The racist connotations may be confined only to the UK. In Australia, the Pakistani cricket team are commonly referred to as the *****, just as the West Indians are known as the Windies.

You sometimes get funny disjoints like this in other areas, ie, you'll get gay folks who want to reclaim poof, queer, fag, etc - although obviously there's plenty of gay people who take offence at the terms and have been abused with the same words. Culturally that stuff is often a bit of a minefield, but I think the racial stuff should generally be taken a lot more seriously.

Some words that get censored, like the traditional form of "beeyatch" often really puzzle me though. Or the english word for "balls". :)

I am against cencorship in general but the word definitely does have flame potential to crop up out of nothing and so it is understandable it is cencsored for me..

Re-tarded (without the hyphen obviously) is censored for some reason. As is the english word for an illegitimate child. Plenty more words that are unnecessarily censored, but I won't mention them as last time I did the thread got closed.

Seems that any proper words that can be used in a pejorative sense automatically get censored though.

There was a similar thing about the word "wog" a while back. I think Tharmi used it in EFM without realising the way it was used as a slur in England.

As for the word "****", if you can go to a rugby match, pass someone of asian heritage wearing a Bradford shirt and hear someone on the coach say "If there's one thing I hate more than a Bradford fan, it's a **** Bradford fan", it's very much a racist word and shouldn't be allowed as there is a large number of Brits in this community, with the possibility that many might be "British-Asian" and could take offence to it.

Re-tarded I have no idea about but illegit child is to do with the way it is used. It's almost never used in its intended context and almost always as an insult.

P-rick is another one. I've tried to use it 'properly' a few times and been surprised. And a$$, when I was talking about a donkey. But bum is ok.

If the word P*ki has been so castigated, then surely some consistency is required in filtering 'kaffir'?

The word certainly hasn't suffered for lack of exposure.

The difference is that it has the same racial slur associated to it in Australia

Anyway i think the short version of Pakistan should not be censored when majority of the users of CW don't see it as racial slur. It a common reference to a person from that nationality in Australia, just like Lankan. It always seemed very odd to me.

I understand that, but surely if it's not slang or vulgar you should be moderating the offensive posts rather than the word itself (which is not inherently offensive). I realise I'm fighting a losing battle though. Can anyone shed light on why re-tarded warrants banning?

'Darren', 'Murphy' and 'benchmark00' should all be filtered. Children shouldn't be exposed to that filth.

The only thing that's exposed to Darren Murphy is your attractive mother.
