Why is it viewed as more important

I think he’s a confidence catcher.
He does drop too many to be among the elite, but have ever seen someone who takes blinders and drops sitters?

It's like a batsman either scoring under 10 or hitting hundreds.

Being invincible from 10 to 100 is very very different from being a talented catcher who can't focus?

Smith is an exceptional catcher but not as reliable as the very best

Would you rather him or a fat **** that barely moves but catches everything like it's a fresh cinnabon

What happened? You called Smith elite before?

I also have Hadlee in my personal team and still have Sachin over Steve Smith despite the fact that Smith is elite in the cordon.

Here's the critical question no one is bringing up. How would we break down the average wickets allowed/runs condeded "defense" contribution breakdown, between bowlers and fielders?

Is it 50/50 contribution, bowlers and fielders? 80/20 for bowlers, or even more extreme?

This determines the plausibility of a specialist bowler vs a batsman+high level fielder to be comparable.

Personally, I think it's always more towards the bowler, because his deliveries determine if anything is possible or relevant in the field. There are 5 outcomes on any given delivery of the top of my head that I see, which are completely independent of fielding, and I'd say have a generally large impact. Bowled/lbw on the good side, and six/wide/no ball on the bad side. Obviously fielding is relevant in every other outcome, but the fact that the best and worst possible outcomes can have nothing to do with any fielder, to me seems to imply it should be skewed towards bowlers.

I'd go somewhere between 70/30 for bowlers compared to fielders, to maybe even 85/15 in some higher leverage situations.

Imagine thinking slip fielding matters the most and then picking Smith to prove your point.
1. It was a 5 year old post

2. I'm literally saying it's not important enough to select him over Sachin.
The exact opposite of what you're saying.

You guys are literally just looking to make snarky remarks and it's being liked by those who are looking to validate weak points to the contrary or looking for cheap laughs.

The point still stands.

If I have a specialist bowling or batting slot, and if it's between two persons, once one is far enough ahead of the other in primary skill, the rest shouldn't matter. That was showing consistency.

For me, that's more acute for bowlers where you only carry 4 specialists, while even for the batting there's an all rounder slot for extra utility / flexibility.
Yes it's important that your tail isn't a total liability, but if that alternative were Bumrah's and McGrath's I'll take it. Thankfully that's hardly ever the case.

The level of disingenuous arguments is hitting a new low though, but I see Subs is busy digging.
