Why 'How's that'?

Brook's side

International Regular
Does anyone know why a bowler asks 'How's that?', to which an umpire replies "Not out" or  ?

Why not ask "Is he out Umpire?" or "What is that Umpire?" (out or not out).

Did this originate from a CricketWeb 'in joke'?

Nah pretty sure @Howe_zat originated from the cricket term. And his IRL name may be Howard or he may be from Lord Howe island. All plausible.

Its mainly used for lbws ofc, short for “how is that?” i.e is it good enough to be called out. It sounds a lot better and catchier shouted than any of your suggestions tbh.

I understand all of this.

But my point is that "how is that?" seems like an odd thing to have to ask.

How is that?
Not out

It just seems odd.

As for the phonetics, you could easily say, "issseeeeeoutt?". It's no worse than "owzzatttt".
