Why do England struggle to produce undisputedly great players?

Maybe but you still failed to take 20 wickets in 2 out of 4 games mate :p And the other reason people call Australian pitches roads is mainly because of the disparity in the performance of your batsmen on Australian pitches and outside...kinda like Bradman and Chris Martin
Will save this comment in the back of my mind for when Pakistan gets rolled for 82 and 65 out here this summer and Joe Burns makes more than that in one innings.

The why isn't there the same disparity with Australia's bowlers home and away? It's common sense man.

Anyone who can't see that Root is a proper player is either trolling or doesn't really watch cricket.

You can rank the Fab 4 anyway you want but the fact is he is included in that group and ****ing deserves to be too.........anyone saying he is a rung below is just talking bollocks.

Did anyone actually say that? Am I missing something?

I'm responding to folks bringing up his 1st tour to Australia as a 22 year old, as if that's actually very meaningful.

But did anyone actually say it was? Or suggest he isn't a "proper player" because of it?

Morgieb's comment had nothing to do with how good a player Root is. If anything he mentioned Root because of what a good player he is and how it supported the point he was making which had nothing to do with Root not being a "proper player".

Point is, there's no need to be concerned about it, because literally no one suggested otherwise

Pretty much what the battlers prince was saying 2 pages back.
eh, I didn't see that. Fair enough.

Yeah Root is just as good as Smith and Williamson

Yeah Root is clearly good enough to be in that Big 3 category. I do think his away record does lack a bit of substance right now, but it's hardly like he's only scored runs on roads at home, either, and it's something I suspect he'll address this summer (winter) anyway.

I'm more concerned about KWs away record. He barely scored a run in that last test against India.

Root's backfoot punch through cover/point is a thing of beauty. Not that it's relevant to the ongoing discussion.

I actually made a funny post in this thread, in 2012, which was probably the last one.

Yet I am hoping Root can change my beliefs that we can't produce great players, I'm actually more worried about his back than anything.

Well given that Australia tend to make 88 and 60 against quality seam attacks, that might just be enough to win the game :p

That aside, would you be going for the Boxing Day Test this year?

Seeing as I live in Sydney, no.

However, my father in law did transfer his scg membership to me when the Incomparable Mrs Burgey and I got married in April so I'll be taking his widow to day one, his daughter to day two and Burgeinho to day three. If the game is still going day four and he's in town, I may take the scumbag Jono that day.

Are you coming to Sydney? Didn't think you were based in Australia. Areyou on tour? There's a magnificent row of strip clubs in Melbourne down the Etihad end of town ftr

Anyone heard of a certain KP? I know he played school cricket and a bit of club in SA but he developed, matured and primed through the county system, the English system and went on to become a legend for England. He should count.

And Freddy ,for all his comedy these days, was once a dangerous, 95mph fast bowler who could hold a bat pretty well too. Both are greats.

Of course, I don't think England have the same quality of great players over the last 50 years, as Australia, Pakistan and the Windies.

I could probably make an XI for each of those nations, with undisputedly great cricketers. If I were to do the same, I would probably be stretching the definition of great when it comes to the likes of Steward, Willis, Swann, Underwood,...certainly English greats and lauded as Gods here in the UK but not players regarded as greats across all nations and all eras.

I would have KP a tier below great and Flintoff a tier below that to be honest. Swann would be the closest out of that list imo.
