Why do batsmen take quIck singles in test crickEt despite them never being worth it?

Was reading today and I couldn’t think of anything but this thread from this quote.

Hobbs is undoubtedly the sauciest run-stealer in the world today. In Sutcliffe, he has found the ideal partner in the felony, for the Yorkshireman unhesitatingly responds to his calls, showing absolute confidence in Hobbs' judgement.

Quick singles are clearly the core of being an ATG batsman, you just need to be able to distinguish yourself which ones are actually makeable.

I feel like ever since you made this thread suicidal singles actually being punished has become a lot more common. Maybe we're just noticing it more
Oh its definitely the latter. Maybe in the 2027 WTC final when Sundar gets to a hundred and his fifty count goes down by 1 everyone in the world will have a simultaneous epiphany and think "huh that seems odd".

Open your eyes people.

Female and male players will take expeditious singles in all formats until the end of time. It is nature as a batter to want to score runs. If the opportunity exists for a clean single one should take it. What represents a valid opportunity for a clean single changes depending on the level you are playing at, ground you are playing at and the opposition. But there are test level fielders at the lowest level. They are rare, but they do exist. It is consequently wise to be very wary of the strongest fielder on the park at all levels.

Brook's head was half on the plane there. Was taking in the moment then suddenly heard it hit the bat and woke up.

We have a new entry for this thread that may just be the worst.
TBF in this particular game that one run, if completed, literally changes the result.

Still stupid obviously. Will say it again, if batsmen find themselves actually running fast in a test match, they're doing something wrong.

A lot of stuff they did was part of their Large Penis Cricket philosophy that was helpful for them psychologically. Maybe you can't strip out individual tactics like quick singles without undermining that overall philosophy.
This post probably applies even more to what happened today than it did to that Aus team.
