I also find it interesting that they dropped Butler because he was injured for 8 months, yet Shane Bond remains in the top 20 despite not playing for over 2 years!

yes the fact that sinclair has been left out is a terrible move, the selectors have shot themselves in the foot if you ask me.
The truth is he hasnt really been playing well lately at all. He might play anyway knowing the rate of New Zealand injuries lately

Thank god Sinclair is gone... he has been given to many chances... Thank god he out of NZ cricket. Macca still has abit in him in terms of ODI cricket... Keep him out of Tests though.

you cant drop a player purely because hes going through bad form, if that were the case then michael vaughn who hasnt really played well for a very long time now should surely also be dropped from the england side ?

well what i mean is that if they are truly a quality player then they will overcome the patch of bad form, sinclair should warrant a place in that side on merit, hes been a decent player for new zealand over the years, hes a better player than lou vincent imo, if the selectors stick with him and really give them their backing then he would overcome his bad patch.

Butler is not in the same league as Vaughan. And he is still young... He has a future but has to wait.

Who would you guys rate as the Top 5 Players?

I would say:

Stephen Fleming
Dan Vettori
Chris Cairns
Shane Bond
Hamish Marshall

I'd find it hard to have Bond in the top 5 going on current form.

I'd go for:

Fleming
Vettori
Cairns
H Marshall
McCullum.

That's not necessarily my list, but how I think the selectors may have ranked it.

Going back to the topic, i find it strange that Sinclair didn't get a contract even though he failed in a couple of ODI againts the aussies earleir this year he is a good batsman & i reckon he should have got the nod over james marshall

From the glowing terms Bracewell used when justifying Oram being rested from the BAN tour, I'd be staggered if he wasn't in the top 5.

And rightly so - especially if Bracewell belatedly trials his 'Oram at 3 in ODs' idea that he was kicking around before the injury. Oram could feasibly become the only guy who is truly influential in virtually every innings NZ plays, batting or bowling, in both forms of the game.

i don't think McCullum would be in the top 5, some of his performances against Australia weren't that flash although he was showing signs of getting back to his normal self against Sri Lanka.
I know, Voltman that this isn't your list but I'm wondering why, if this was what the selectors may have ranked it, is Cairns in the top5, he is only playing ODI's and wouldn't it be more logical to have someone like Oram, who plays both tests and odi's ?
Also, James, I wouldn't think that Bond would be in the top 5 before Oram, I think Bondy would be around 7 or 8.

From quotes i've heard, apparently Butler is going to stay in NZ and try to work his way back into the fold.
Sinclair is more doubtful though....

I know thats why he needs practise b4 he comes back. It may not have been the right choice I think Chris Harris shouldn't be in the team

There's news this morning that Sinclair is also angry at being left out & that he'll either quit cricket or go overseas to Australia or South Africa.

I really cannot believe how stupid the selectors have been.
Can't understand why Sinclair should be so upset about, when he has done very little to justify another year of contract.

If he really wants to show that he's deserving he should try and get help from a good coach and try and improve his technique and come back in fine form to force himself back into reckoning.

Its obvious Bracewell is keeping Harris on in the hope he'll stay onto the 2007 world cup.

Lot of people in the media critical of retaining Macmillan also.

If Shane Bond doesn't come back to play over the next year , he would've wasted NZ cricket a lot of money for nothing .

IMO a player that has scored 2 test double centries and a 150 should not be discarded
He's done hardly anything since his last Test 100...

What about if his other 39 innings have brought him 797 runs @ 22.77?
