Who is the best international captain?

This idea came to me when thinking about Stephen Fleming. Everyone speaks so highly of him as a captain, but when New Zealand came to England, I was unimpressed.

I think Michael Vaughan has done very well since becoming England captain, I also think Ricky Ponting is a fair captain, but his team captains itself. I think Sourav Ganguly is possibly the best though.

Fleming was somewhat hampered by an injured attack.

Fleming captained a side who was really struggling with injuries.Yes they lost 3-0 but anyone with half a brain could see that the series was tightly fought, so i think that is a bit unfair on fleming.

Ganguly most certainly is not the best captain, the level of his ineptitude sometimes astounds me...cant field up to international standard,poor body language when things are going wrong etc.

I think Vaughan is developing..some of his field placings are inventive, and he does appear to want to make things happen.

I have no problems what so ever with Ponting as a captain...think about what he has dealt with..his two premier bowlers being missing for a long time,a tricky tour of Sri Lanka (tough in anyones books) etc.

I feel sorry for Lara as a captain.

I do think Smith has the potential to be a great captain for SA.

I dont even know who Pakistans captain is these days???? Inzy????Yes it is isnt it.Not really watched him to see how he is doing.

Fleming: i think he's the best captain and he can rally his troops better than anyone.
Ganguly: his good points out weigh the bad points, he's had great success as captain and instilled a good bit of confidence in the indian side...but they cant win finals
Ponting: captains a side of champs well, doesnt have to do much as a captain but when the occassion calls for it he leads from the front.
Attapattu: id say attapattu is an excellent captain, he motivates his troops and there is a fair mix of veterans and new blood in the SL camp.
Inzamam: mediocre captain
Lara: great batsmen no doubt not so great captain with an undisiplined WI side.
Vaughn: good captain, innovates and can motivate and has a talented side to compliment him nicely.

should be micheal vaughn. if u look at the England side they are a pretty young side...but
now still they are a world class side... the captain has a big influence to the english sides victories.

Stephen Fleming is no 1 because he carries a Team of average performers (Shane Bond excluded) and manages to get the best out of them even when lot of his key performers are out with injuries. He leads from the front by scoring and performing (in difficult no 1 or No 3 position ) well for his Team in difficult situations. This is why he is the best Captain.

tell me why you beleive India are the most improved team!!!!! They have been hovering mid table for ages, the results are really coming through despite the talent...if anything India are probably the biggest underacheivers given their talent levels in world cricket at the moment.

how anyone can say Ganguly is a good captain is beyond me I am afraid


And no Fleming isnt overrated, his team is performing almost on a level with India in tests and certainly superior to them in ODI and yet NZ dont have the talented players that India do

but Fleming has had limited talent resources to play with...and I think they have performed well in the last few years

How can you say that? India are now a real force under Ganguly, before he came to power they had been perpetual mid table underachievers. He has really sorted them out and enabled them to reach their potential.

Well they have improved under him to be fair. They beat India at home and managed to avoid defeat in Australia, and Fleming has far less resources than Ponting or Ganguly. But I agree Ganguly is better.
