Which bowler is the most devastating when on song?

Krypto

U19 Vice-Captain
Many of the modern era greats was absolutely devastating however the Mcgrath and Warne combo. With either able to do it alone aswell in any conditions.

My takes:

Pacer: Ambrose on a bouncy wicket, followed by Johnson in Aus/SA and Imran with his reverse swing on a dusty wicket. They have all have run through high quality batting lineups multiple times in their chosen conditions. Anderson and Steyn would be close but are less likely to take a 7/8-fer.

Spinners: Murali in SL followed by Ashwin in India. Murali has run through both strong Indian and Australian lineups at home, while Ashwin didn't face quite the same batting quality.

Flat pitch: Holding followed by Shoaib. Holding has several clear performances running through good lineups when there isn't much in the pitch to offer.

Paddles wasn't too shabby when he was on song. 15 wickets at the Gabba and 33 in a 3 test series against the old foe.

Son Of Coco

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Scott Boland, especially after he skittles England in their first innings at Edgbaston. I predict he'll take 7/9.

Stuart Broad was the first that sprung to my mind. Measuring 'on song' output relative to his overall career.

Slifer

International Captain
Waqar was pretty useless in Oz and anywhere that didn't offer swing. I'm going with Steyn.

mitchell johnson

dale steyn had angry eyes but was about pace and swing and his balls kissed the pitch mostly

johnson was about breaking bones and punching the pitch unlike steyn plus blood lust

i that ashes, he gave a glimpse of the windies pace quartet to people who haven't seen them

hope bumrah returns and targets anderson again tho

The answer to this thread is definitely either Stuart Broad or Mitchell Johnson.......far from great bowlers but both capable of taking 5 in a spell when they were on.

The answer is probably Curtly but Johnson/Broad are likely to be chosen as bowlers of great spells rather than great bowlers.

Similarly, if we were to ask this question about batsmen, players like VVS, KP and Clarke would probably be mentioned, despite the fact that many of the true ATG's such as Smith have just as complete a set of brilliant knocks

Yep, totaly agree with that. Always said KP was a player of great innings and not a great player. VVS falls into that category for sure....not too sure about Michael Clarke though but I probably rate him higher than most. Definitely better than KP and VVS for mine.

I agree with Johnson over Steyn.

Johnson was capable of ripping through a side with a 7-fer and was irresistible in a way even Steyn couldn't match.
