Better than Kapil Dev and the best Indian pace bowler I have seen. Lets wait to see the end of his career though before comparing him the Pakistan trio.

I think being so good at LO cricket will hurt him in the long run, as will Kohli overbowling him.

What he does have in his favour (in terms of longevity) is that he can be a spectator when we play at home as long as other countries don't learn how to play straightbreaks.

People have a completely ahistorical perspective on Kapil and think he was some above average trier for all his career while Bumrah is a class apart simply by default. The incredible feats Kapil performed before the age of 25 are often forgotten.

Kapil from 1978 to 1980, the age of 21 had 106 wickets in 26 tests @ 26.7 and 1033 runs @ 33.3.

Even the above is due to the fact that he had a bad debut year (1978) in test cricket at the age of 18 where he averaged 56.

Kapil in his first full year in test cricket in 1979 at the age of 19 led the international wicket taking charts in tests by a massive margin. He took 74 wickets @ 22.9 and scored 609 runs @ 30.9 in 17 tests. In 1979 and 1980, he had 90 wickets in 20 tests @ 22.7.

In the subsequent year, in the Indian tour of Australia in 80/81, Australia were leading 1-0 and had to chase 143 to win in the third and final test in Melbourne. Kapil took 5-28 to bowl Australia out in the 4th innings for 83 for a historic win to seal a very unlikely series draw.

Kapil Dev had 75 wickets in an incredible 18 tests in 1983 @ 23.18 bowling as the sole test level bowler in his side for most of the time with only batting AR Ravi Shastri as his support. The second highest amount of wickets that year was 54 by Marshall. 11 of those 18 tests were against the ATG WI side against whom he took 46 wickets @ 20.89. The remaining 6 tests were against Pakistan which was the second best side at the time. He also scored 579 runs @ 22.26 to add to the above including a 100* out of 95 balls against a bowling attack of Marshall, Holding, Roberts and Garner at Port of Spain.

That is not even the most remembered part of his year as he also led India to an impossible world cup victory in 1983 scoring 303 runs @ 60.06 with a SR of 108.99 and taking 12 wickets @ 20.41 over 8 games.

The below puts into context the bowling attack Kapil was working with in 1983:

Bumrah probably will have 300 @ 23 or w/e and overtake him overall tbf but not ready to put him ahead of Kapil at this stage considering Kapil was arguably even more impressive early on.

I will gladly wait 40~ tests for that.

I wonder how Bumrah will bowl after age 33 if he lasts that long. You have to imagine that windmill will slow down a fair bit as the body ages. Will he be a dibbly-dobbler with a weirdo action?

It's difficult to judge Kapil purely on bowling stats because there was literally no one at the other end while Bumrah has had much better bowling partners. And much better is a vast understatement. I mean if you saw off a kapil dev over, you had madan lal at the other end. That certainly makes a huge difference. Very telling post from Teja there which underlines the point.

My all time India XI would have a pace bowling attack of Kapil Dev, Bumrah, and Amar Singh. And it says more about the history of Indian pace bowling that a guy with 22 Test matches walks into the side and the third guy has 7 Test matches that he played in the 20s/30s. Really it's only been Dev that's a shoe in. Zaheer Khan you can argue about, but he wouldn't get close to most other sides all time XIs.

How does Asif vs Bumrah compare? They roughly had a similar career.

Bumrah 22 matches 95 wickets @ 22.6 / 50.3
Asif 23 matches 106 wickets @ 24.4 / 48.7

Ah, that takes me back to my childhood - watching India tour Australia with a pace attack of Madan Lal and Roger Binny!
That's nothing. Prior to that they had an attack of Rusi Surti and Abid Ali. Their job was to take the shine of the ball. If they got wickets, it was bonus. They did have to score some runs to accumulatively justify their selection - all 4 averaged over 20 in Tests. Making their categorization a difficult task, were they bowlers or AR or bits-and-pieces or what ?

Bumrah should have got his 100 test wickets in 23rd test but India decided to bowl only once.

As of now he is behind the Pakistani trio but I definitely think he will retire as a better bowler than Waqar for sure.

overrated asf, siraj will have a better career. Bumrah will forever be known as choker, no baller and "vro he applies pressure from his end to allow siraj to get the wicket vro"

as for comparision to Pakistani greats. This is just a laughable jerk reaction thread, let him play 90 tests first like Waqar.
