Where do you rank Shivnarine Chanderpaul in all-time best batsmen?

bagapath

International Captain
So… Steve Waugh is considered a tier below Gilchrist and in the same tier as Pietersen…

And Williamson is a tier above Root and Kohli? Thats a new one for me.

Also lol. Babar Azam is in the same tier as Boycott and Greenidge and a tier above Lloyd? Really?
would love to hear your take

He doesn't make the top 25 for me from the last 50 years.
My top 50 test batsmen since 1973 after taking in the feedback from you guys.

Tier 1:
Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar and Steve Smith. (6)

Tier 2:
Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid, Kumar Sangakara, Jacques Kallis, Javed Miandad, Adam Gilchrist, Allan Border and Kane Williamson (8)

Tier 3:
Kevin Pietersen, Steve Waugh, Inzamam Ul Haq, Younis Khan, Virender Sehwag, Matthew Hayden, Andy Flower, Joe Root, Graeme Smith, ABDV and Virat Kohli, (11)

Tier 4:
Shivnaraine Chanderpaul, Mahela Jayawardene, Mohammad Yousuf, Michael Clarke, Martin Crowe, Hashim Amla, Gordon Greenidge, Geoff Boycott, VVS Laxman, GR Viswanath, Zaheer Abbas, Babar Azam and Doug Walters (13)

Tier 5:
Richie Richardson, Michael Hussey, Aravind De Silva, Clive Lloyd, Graham Gooch, Mark Taylor, David Gower, Justin Langer, Sanath Jayasurya, Desmond Haynes, David Boon and Mark Waugh (12)
No way Chanderpaul is same level as Martin Crowe, Boycott, Greenidge and Walters

I like it that the top tier is pretty much okay for everyone...
Oh its not okay for me but I understand its a very unpopular opinion of mine.

would love to hear your take
Do I really need to explain a guy who has 8 of his 9 tons in Asia and averages 35 outside of it not being comparable to those others in his tier? Or being worse than others below it?

What has Williamson done to put him a whol level above Root and Kohli? I can understand rating him above them if that’s your preference but a whole tier? Really?

Gilchrist’s batting is being very overrated… Since when is a he a better batsman than Waugh lol when did that happen? Pietersen is chronically overrated but Waugh not being in that second tier at least is an absolute travesty.

Williamson definitely belongs in tier 2. He’s better than a couple of names in there. Pietersen and Gilchrist should be in tier 4 tho

lol what? Which batsmen there apart from Gilchrist (who is already too high) is he supposedly better than? I guess you COULD argue Miandad..

I’d take him over Dravid and Miandad for sure. He should end up averaging the same as Dravid in a much harder era

no

Dravid averaged 53 away from home. Williamson averages 42 and that is massively boosted by Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, against whom he averages 83 and 97 against away, respectively. Kane is a home track bully.

Nah. Kane is owned by so many tests pre-23 years old including way more away games.

Legit has bugger all problems away besides scheduling

Weren’t you arguing before that home and away should be weighed equally? Anyways Dravids record against Aus and SA is mediocre and his away average would be worse in this era as well

He's very good just not as good as the others. Root and Kohli are both above him now
Root v Williamson is closer but Kohli is well behind. He isn't in the top 20 batsmen of the last 5 years.

Re KDub he has the 2nd highest average of all time for tests after turning 24.

So I guess Greg Chappell, Javed Miandad and Viv Richards were hacks in your eyes?

Chanderpaul wouldn't even be in the top 5 of West Indies batsmen but you only have Lara ahead of him
Chanderpaul may creep into the lower end of the top 10 WI bats. Best to keep Tests and ODIs separate.
