Where do you rank Bumrah's performance among the greatest ever bowling series?

Qlder

The first cricket series I ever saw was the 1978/79 Ashes. Rodney Hogg on debut took 41 wkts @ 12.85 with 5 5fers and 2 10fers

....so somewhere below that

I also have 1981 Ashes where Alderman took 42 wkts and Lillee 39 wkts above Hogg, as were Hadlee's 33 wkts in 3 tests in 1985/86 and Mitchell Johnson's 37 wkts @ 13.97 in 2013/14 Ashes

Some other series to consider:

Hadlee in Aus 85/86
Ambrose in Aus 93
Imran vs Ind 83
Johnson Ashes 2013/14
Alderman Ashes 1989

Best ever by an Indian abroad you'd think. He didn't quite drag the rest of his team's gaseous, decomposing cadaver over the finish line so doesn't reserve him a seat alongside the immortals. Also was a series of spells for him, as is usually the case, as opposed to being just a total blitz throughout. Being nitpicky though, was a privilege watching him bowl.

The lack of consistent support, and thinness of fourth/fifth options, really stands out to me (as well as having a crap captain) as elevating this performance. If we look at Johnson 13/14 for example, yes he was more destructive (on much less helpful surfaces), but he was assisted massively by having a full complement of supporting bowlers who also bowled very well (Harris in particular was exceptional), and a captain who knew full well what he had on his hands and how to use him and so only deployed him very judiciously in short bursts to maximise his output. Meanwhile you have Bumrah on the stump mic pleading with Rohit to bowl ****ing someone else because he is all tapped out but nope gotta keep milking that cow again for the ninth spell of the day.

He was bowling a couple of unplayable balls every over at times, was truly insane bowling. It's probably only behind Johnson in the ashes and maybe Bumrah here among quick bowlers.
Yeah idk why people have forgotten that series so easily, that spell at the end of Day 1 at TB in particular stands out for me as being just ludicrously unplayable. Fast legbreaks at 140km/h pitching middle and off. The rest of it wasn't far behind either.

wow, did this happen for real?
Yeah apparently he was heard on the stump mic in Melbourne on that fateful afternoon saying "bas abhi, nahi lag raha zor" which I'm told the tl;dr is basically "I'm done". But Rohit kept going back to him anyway.

I do remember his body language in that last session of the day really deteriorated, that was the first time all series he looked properly worn down mentally as well as physically

From what I recall Broad only had one really destructive spell that tour through India even though he was consistently excellent

Yep. It was the final spell of the day in search of that Boland-Lyon wicket. Broke him. **** Rohit.
And Bumrah missed out on Syndey's "spciest pitch". Rohit should have never returned from his paternity leave.

If you have to rely on your best bowler even for 10th wicket, may as well as forfeit the match. In any case, longer Boland and Lyon batted, better were the chances for India to draw.
