The question is, Would the umpires take and early lunch???

If they were to, i'd cut loose for 15 mins to try and get that intimidating 300 lead then declare, then attack attack attack....

Get a couple of early wickets and Australia could go into a shell which could see even more wickets fall...

And If they didn't take the early lunch, i'd let loose for 5/10 mins and com out for 10 mins crack at them....

Well, I'd have Flintoff and the rest of the batting lineup go haywire and score as if possessed by some evil genie....and declare at lunch and because it is a good pitch for seam bowling have Gough and Caddick open the bowling with aggressive fields, I'd use the bowlers in relatively shortish spells considering that the aussies are a good unit at batting, attack with Flintoff,Gough,Caddick from one end and ask White/Ormond to keep it tight from the other and maybe take a wicket or two...

If it was Headingley then you'd declare then and there. Let some mental demons go to work.

Anywhere else you'd declare at lunch after trying to get another 50-60 runs in that half hour.

As mentioned earlier bowl the seamers in short bursts with attacking fields. If Australia looks to be getting close then push the fielders back.

Thats England team would not bowl out that Aus team in 2 sessions.
But you're forgetting that this English side has already won the first Test, so have bowled Aus out twice then, and once in this game...

The teams winning, so there's no way Ormond is in it!

What would really happen?

We'd bat until nearly tea, set Australia 400+ and draw.

Stupid Welfare Mentality.

Final - WI v India (Day/Night)
You're WI and are batting first on a flat track which has a bit of juice in it early in the innings. WI are struggling at 122/5. Lara on 32* and Powell yet to face a ball. 28 Overs are complete. The Indian bowling card:-

Zaheer 7-1-22-2
Agarkar 5-0-29-0
Bangar 3-1-12-1
Harbhajan 6-1-22-1
Ganguly 2-0-10-0
Sehwag 5-1-22-0
1 Run Out

5 Extras

The current bowlers are Harbhajan and Sehwag. What do you do?

Keep in mind that the aim is to win!:D

22 Overs to go.... And dillon is next so, If I were Lara I would advise Powell to knock it around up and until atleast the 40th. Build a partnership get the score close to 200 in 40. Then they could take more risks. Zaheer's spent 7 overs and Agarkar is expensive at the end, so not a lot of percentage in playing aggressively.

BTW the previous scenaio you posted, since England have won the first test already, and they have a good lead in the second test against a formiddable bowling attack in helpful conditions, I see no reason whatsoever to play for the draw...get em out and attack em full steam ahead ! But....sadly I dont think as Captain I would face up to stupid and ignorant remarks that I would attract from the British tabloids IF Australia were to win that test.

Actually, a situation quite like that happened in the VB series last time WI were there against the Aus, execpt they were chasing, Powell batted well hitting the bad balls away for boundries and got out in the 36th over for 37 I think, Lara then suddenly went after McGrath and Warne and all of a sudden WI looked like winning the game but rain interveined and Aus won by the Duckworth-lewis method... BTW: Lara was increadible in scoring a brilliant 116* in vain after starting slowly(we all know the problem he had with his technique in Aus) and that century was the only one he scored for nearly 11 months until he scored 111* and was admitted in hospital, he however did score a 92* against SA at home which another flash of brilliance....
The thing in common in all those innings was two facts:
1- He wasn't in-form and was struggling.
2- He held the innings together as all other batsmen faltered.

Which makes these preformances, IMO, great.

P.S: sorry for the sidetracking of the topic...hehehehe:D;)

Well I'd say Harby is likely to get a few more overs so I'd get Lara to go after him a little and ask Powell to knock the ball around off the pacers, pushing ones and twos, and keep Harby out (Powell isn't the best player of spin).

Once Harby is out of overs, both players are sensational players of pace so with 10 overs to go, I'd say push for at least a single off every ball and the occasional boundary if you can. To just indescriminantly go for the slog would be irresponsible with these two being the last recognised batsmen.

The scoreline isn't bad other than the wickets so there'd be no need to try anything really rash at the 28 over point. Save that for later when they've got their eye in.

If one of them gets out, I'd say the plan of attack would be to puch the singles and twos until around the last 5 overs.

TC...hehehe (as in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon) I agree with 'most' of what you said but for one small detail.... And that is Powell is probably one of the best player of spin out of the young batsmen of the WIs... It is just when he tries to slog them he gets out, he seems to have patches of 'cross bat slog that spinner' sometimes which he really needs to address, he is the best sweeper of the young crop, but at times resorts to slogging the spinners, which is one issue he needs to address, the other one is playing lofted drives to balls which are just short of a length, if he solves these two issues i think he will be much more consistent...

Gotchya: You see thats a problem, he does play well when he goes in with some time on his hand, but he can't play orthodox shots when he is ASKED to go out there and punish the bowling to get the run-rate up after the top order use the overs up and he is left with 3-8 overs at the end and then he is critisied for having poor shot selection, when he doesn't get time to get his eye in.
