I've started this thread to let all of you all put your captaincy skills to practice!

Here's a hypothetical situation...

1st Ashes Test - England won (hey...it's only hypothetically)

2nd Ashes Test in England

England
Trescothick
Vaughan
Hussain
Thorpe
Flintoff
Stewart
White
Giles
Caddick
Gough
Ormond

Australia
Hayden
Slater
Ponting
M.Waugh
S.Waugh
Martyn
Gilchrist
Warne
Gillespie
Lee
McGrath

England have a second innings lead of 270 runs with 5 wickets in hand and Stewart and Flintoff at the crease. Half an hour is left in the first session of the 5th day. The pitch is extremely good for the seamers. What do you do? Do you declare? Do you play for the draw?

Declare - get 20 minutes before lunch, and the bowlers are fresh for after lunch - Aus would have to go some to get it, and can always plug gaps.

nah Aus could make 150 runs a session easy against england, they got nobody to slow us down for long periods od time

Declare. Get the Aussie openers in for a couple of hairy overs before lunch with ultra-attacking fields for Gough and Caddick. After lunch, come out and attack.

Why the heck would you play for a draw when you're 270 up with two sessions to play??

i would play for the draw, keeping the series at 1-0 is better than taking a huge risk for an outside chance of 2-0, but it probably ending up being 1-1.
Thats England team would not bowl out that Aus team in 2 sessions.

What if we had a matchwinning Off-spinner? ;)

About 10 Wickets at 50 against the Aussies and 50 odd at 37 in Tests...strangely the same average in FC...which is why I wanted him dropped...

My mistake, they'll have to settle for the legendary part time of Vaughan then.:D
He got Tendulkar...not bad eh? ;)
