Obviously can make a good case for Hutton, Gavaskar, Hadlee, Murali, Smith, Miller and others too.
Sydney BarnesMy list:
1. Sobers - pretty much universal agreement as the best cricketer since Bradman, his name brooks no further discussion on his greatness, reputation as the 'he could do anything's
2. Sachin - From early career, drew comparisons with Bradman, and by the end was seen as the complete bat. He became the bat to measure all other batsmen with.
3. Warne - Insane hype during his career start, firmly seen as the greatest spinner ever, often called the best bowler ever, prematurely put in Wisden Top Five by 2000.
4. Viv - Exploded on the scene like a force like no other, his charisma and batting style put him ahead of all his competitors, there is no discussion over who is the best bat of his era.
5. Hobbs - England's best bat, nothing has dampened that reputation, has become legendary status.
6. Lillee - The archetypical fast bowler, seen as the gold standard for all, similar to Viv, his charisma made him the exemplar.
7. Imran Khan - More as an allrounder cricket figure and captain, his leadership and flair gave him mythical status and put him ahead of ARs of his era.
8. Lara - Always seen as flawed but something special. Synonymous with genius.
9. Wasim - The left arm angle, and his repertoire of skills gave him an exclusive rep
10. Gilly - Just the ATG instant selection for wicket keepers, seen to have redefined the role.
11. Barry Richards/Pollock - Hard to separate but both have become legends based on peer and pundit rating.
12. Marshall - Not as celebrated but very high post career ratings, more as first among equals
13. Hammond - Very high peer rating even though a bit diminished over time
14. Kallis - Career end and post career higher ratings as an AR and his rep keeps getting higher.
15 Botham - 81 immortalized his reputation forever.

Botham not picking Imran isn't a surprise. I think it is noteworthy to point out Marshall wasn't some confirmed best of the best by his peers either. In indication of peer ratings/rankings can be seen in players' listings of their best teams/squads in their books.
I have selected 3 (Botham, Lamb and Marsh) who are of a similar era.
It is more than apparent who the players are who all 3 hold in high regard. It's not unexpected to see players like Viv Richards and Lillee held in such high regard. What might be surprising is to see Greenidge held so highly (ahead of Gavaskar in 2 squads) along with Abdul Qadir who is a unanimous choice as spinner. It's pleasing to see Miandad listed by all three. Two of the three have Hadlee in ahead of Imran while the selection of WI's quicks is quite diverse (4 different nominations)

That was the case in England from 1912, and in Australia for a time from around 1908.Sydney Barnes
Everyone who played with or against him were convinced, “He was the Greatest Bowler there had ever been and the Greatest there ever will be”
Sobers
Tendulkar
Viv
Warne
Lillee
Akram
Hobbs
Marshall
Lara
Barnes
As I said earlier, agree with the names, if not the orders, and crazy how both of u came up with the exact same 10 players.Honestly:
Barnes
Hobbs
Sobers
Sachin
Viv
Lillee
Wasim
Marshall
Warne
Lara
Honorable mention to Imran, Lindwall, Hammond, Gilchrist etc
Those are the 10 I generally see people such as pundits, fans etc rating. Above is not in order fwiw.

The teams are a good illustration of how few cricketers' reputations during the past fifty years are set in stone, compared with before, and the subjective nature of judging them.Botham not picking Imran isn't a surprise. I think it is noteworthy to point out Marshall wasn't some confirmed best of the best by his peers either.
There really weren't many top shelf spinners to compare with in that era.Qadir may be the most overrated player indeed.
Going to say Underwood, Bedi and Chandra but they really were quite a bit senior. There really weren't many top shelf spinners to compare with in that era.
I think a lot of people just loved watching him bowl. Objectively, he just wasn't effective enough to be rated that highly though.Qadir may be the most overrated player indeed.
He was a character and was fun to watch bowl.I think a lot of people just loved watching him bowl. Objectively, he just wasn't effective enough to be rated that highly though.

So Warne minus the greatness. He was a character and was fun to watch bowl.
