What should you do to get a break??

DingDong

State Captain
Listening to Shane Watson try to talk his way in to the team got me thinking that cricketers should place more importance on self-promotion.

This what music artists and entertainers have been doing for ages. Can't believe cricketers haven't thought of this. It's DingDong to the rescue again.

How to self-promote yourself

1. Open facebook, Myspace and other networking accounts. Try to get people used to your name.
2.Put videos of yourself playing well online. Sign in under different usernames put good comments in (e.g. why is this guy not playing for the national team, wow what a player!, etc).
3. Go into forums and start dropping your name into conversations. This is very very important nowadays.
4. Start hanging out with players from the level you want to be at. In short, Network.
5. Product Lines- Put your name on t-shirts and caps and things and start handing them out.
6.Go to games with big crowds and get your good-looking (I can't emphasize this enough) friends to wear your stuff. The more people see your name the more they would want to know who you are.
7. Reinvent yourself- Sure you started out as a solid middle order batsman, but it wouldn't hurt your chances if you could suddenly come back one season as a big hitting fast bowling all-rounder. Make people take notice.
4. Hire a good PR agent- Emphasis on the word "good". Doesn't matter if you are 13 or 30, a good PR agent is a must.

(Please add your own in here)

Hope this has been helpful. Follow these rules closely and your break isn't too far away!

Get drunk regularly, act like a **** to everyone except your teammates, have 'swagger', improve your fielding, and create a good vibe in the dressing room.

sigh, if we're ignoring the great suggestions from the OP and trying to answer sensibly, I'd say besides the obvious of working on your skills, application and training, it's probably important to produce a couple of eye-catching performances on whatever big stage presents itself, combined with either lucking into, or placing yourself at the right place at the right time.

Siddle is probably an example - people thought he had promise coming up, but his efforts in the Shield final last year have probably been remembered which hasn't hurt him at all.

Bribe the bellboy to tear up the notice so that the team bogan goes fishing instead of knowing that he's supposed to be at a team meeting.

Obviously, I was being facetious before. But I do think off-the-field things are important. For example, we regularly hear how important Symonds is to the dressing room and how his character helps the team. Ponting has said often how he rated Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle because of their 'uncomplicated approach' and that they take everything in the game and lives pretty simply. Also, Krejza I think is someone for whom personality was important... they were going to pick a spinner who would take some stick so they went for one with a bolshy personality.

Take, on the other hand, players like Noffke and MacGill who have been apparently difficult on tour, and someone like Casson who is a more sensitive character than Krejza. These players are less likely to be given a chance.

Hodge is meant to be a 'different' character to tour with as well, at least according to Ponting. He didn't say it like it was a negative, but they couldn't get rid of him in favour of Ponting's best mate Martyn.

Hark, in those simpler days, atleast in Indian cricket, a crore or two to the cronies of the selectors would have done the trick.

Now, you just have to be born to one of 'em top honchos.
