What should Australia do now?

Obviously though someone like Stuart Clark is a bit different as he pretty clearly looks like someone who could go on performing well into his mid-30s.
Well thats the hope. There is no gurantee. When he returns its going to be very interesting. He going to be 34 this year if he keeps it up, maybe another 2 years but you can't say for sure with rupert.

Looking ahead for the tour to SA & the Ashes mainly, with Watson out. I'd be picking 6 batsmen & 4-semaers. Easily the best balance for Australia right now.

Haddin no doubt is a very solid batsman & beyond your average keeper-bat, but surely # 6 in test cricket is a position too high for him.
If your going to play 6 batters, then I would agree with a line-up of 4 specialist seamers and no spinner. I suppose you could throw the ball to Clarke, or Katich for a few over of spin if need be. Hauritz has not overly impressed me yet.

With regards to Australian bowling, why don't they give Nathan Bracken a shot at the test side? He has an impeccable ODI record...

The question is whether he can generate the swing with the red ball as he does with the white ball in ODI's. That is where his main strength lies.

I think it's possibly time to make Watson the captain of the side, irrespective of whether he plays or not. I think taking him on tour to SA as the tour captain will at least mean a smooth transition when Watson inevitably takes over the captaincy full-time after Ponting.

Ponting can continue to lead the team out on the field for the next few tours until Watson gets better.

I've always been of the impression that the selectors had little faith in him. He seems to fit the mould of an ODI bowler exceptionally well, which doesn't necessarily translate to test success. He sort of needs batsmen to actively desire to play strokes against him instead of making them play.

This article (and the comments below it) pretty much sums up everything that's wrong with Australian cricket at the moment. I'd say fix this problem and we can still be world beaters to an extent.
