My Test 3-4 would be Ponting-Lara with no competition.
Whither SRT?

Actually in terms of statistics I'd say Murali is the best spinner ever and Warne is not far behind!Swanny said:Warne is the best spinner ever, and Murali's not far behind
What about Shivnarine Chanderpaul? He has been around a while and he hasn't done to badly with 4155 @ 44.20. Still think BCL is class anywayluckyeddie said:Hit the nail fairly and squarely on the head. Pressure. Lara has (to a certain extent) carried the side from a batting perspective for so many years.
Last Three years I dare say Ponting is avraging roughly the same if not better.Bazza said:Lara can graft.

Sorry for the format.
Anyway, first of all it was three great years, and secondly I wouldn't say he's stalled since. Bounced back from a poor 1996 to be consistent in 97 and 98 and great once more in 99. Struggled in 2000 when England blew WI away, but everyone has an off year, and that really was the low point for WI. Lara was outstanding again in 2001 and has been this year.
In ODIs, he's been pretty consistent al along except around 1999-2000. For me Lara has successfully rediscovered the form which propelled him to stardo nearly ten years ago. The last three years he is averaging high 50's in tests and high 40's in ODIs. You just can't argue with that. I doubt Ponting can even match those numbers.
I meant ODI Sachin opening there. Test 3-4-5 Ponting-Tendulkar-Laramarc71178 said:Whither SRT?
Chanderpaul hasn't had nearly as much pressure and he really only came into his own last year. Before that he made consistent 50+ scores.PY said:What about Shivnarine Chanderpaul? He has been around a while and he hasn't done to badly with 4155 @ 44.20. Still think BCL is class anyway
It comes back to the supporting cast around each player...stark difference.Eclipse said:Last Three years I dare say Ponting is avraging roughly the same if not better.

Nah, what I meant was that LE said BCL had carried the WI for a while and I meant that Shiv Chanderpaul has been around and his performances haven't exactly been shoddy. If I've mis-understood you, ignore me. I'm deliriously happy about England beating the All BlacksMr Mxyzptlk said:Chanderpaul hasn't had nearly as much pressure and he really only came into his own last year. Yes Marc. He can.marc71178 said:He can?
He's not the sort I'd put into that role as one the rest of the team play their shots around!
IMO a world X1 should be picked on the best players avalable not what suites Team balance. If somone is genuinly good enough to make a world X1 and deserves his spot he should not bee keept out because his style does not suite the team.marc71178 said:He can?

You've misunderstood me. My point was a contradiction of your point in that Chanderpaul has been carrying nowhere near the burden of Lara over the years. He only had 2 (?) Test hundreds before last year! Last year he really started to come on.PY said:Nah, what I meant was that LE said BCL had carried the WI for a while and I meant that Shiv Chanderpaul has been around and his performances haven't exactly been shoddy.
