Anyway, first of all it was three great years, and secondly I wouldn't say he's stalled since. Bounced back from a poor 1996 to be consistent in 97 and 98 and great once more in 99. Struggled in 2000 when England blew WI away, but everyone has an off year, and that really was the low point for WI. Lara was outstanding again in 2001 and has been this year.

In ODIs, he's been pretty consistent al along except around 1999-2000. For me Lara has successfully rediscovered the form which propelled him to stardo nearly ten years ago. The last three years he is averaging high 50's in tests and high 40's in ODIs. You just can't argue with that. I doubt Ponting can even match those numbers.

Actually in terms of statistics I'd say Murali is the best spinner ever and Warne is not far behind!

OK I was wrong, in the last three years, Ponting has scored 2377 test runs at 58 and 2477 ODI runs at 45. Lara has 2035 test runs at 56 and 1708 ODI runs at 46, but don't forget he did have an elbow injury and strange illness (Hepatitis?). I guess they're both just as good as each other!!

Hit the nail fairly and squarely on the head. Pressure. Lara has (to a certain extent) carried the side from a batting perspective for so many years.

What about Shivnarine Chanderpaul? He has been around a while and he hasn't done to badly with 4155 @ 44.20. Still think BCL is class anyway

Lara would make my First 11 but if he were to replace somone it would be Kallis or Dravid or somone else Not Ponting.

Not saying Ponting is better than Lara I dont subscribe to that it's just that he is to good to be left out of a world X1 as is Lara IMO.

IMO a world X1 should be picked on the best players avalable not what suites Team balance. If somone is genuinly good enough to make a world X1 and deserves his spot he should not bee keept out because his style does not suite the team.

You've misunderstood me. My point was a contradiction of your point in that Chanderpaul has been carrying nowhere near the burden of Lara over the years. He only had 2 (?) Test hundreds before last year! Last year he really started to come on.

I never said he did badly, but I said that he scored consistent 50+ scores which does not take that much pressure off Lara. If I'm not mistaken, his Test avge was in the high 30's until last year. Lara, however has HAD to score big for the West Indies to have a hope of coming around until recently.
