What is the greatest feat of longevity in test cricket?

Kirkut

International Regular
42 year old Gooch scoring 154 on a seaming track under grey skies against Walsh/Patterson/Ambrose/Marshall.

Your hand eye coordination is gone by that age, all that matters is experience.

International Captain
Hanif Mohammad's famous 337 (970 minutes, 24 fours) made against West Indies in 1958. After Pakistan found itself following on from a first-innings deficit of 473 runs on the afternoon of the third day, Hanif spent more than sixteen hours at the crease compiling his runs, allowing Pakistan to draw the game. It remains the longest innings in Test history.

Except he was 37, not 42.
My bad, but it still holds true that a 37 year old batter doesn't have very good hand eye coordination. You can see that happening to Steve Smith and Rohit Sharma right now.

Gooch at 38-39 was not playing those elegant drives off fast bowlers (he was never known for that either during his younger days). But the way he negotiated some of the toughest bowling attacks ever was a masterclass.
