What is the best 'below ATG' XI?

Fuller Pilch

Hall of Fame Member
NZ post-war XI with 5 batters averaging under 45, one allrounder, and bowlers averaging more than 30 and wk with batting average below 25

John Wright, Mark Richardson, and Tom Latham are unlucky not to get an opening spot, while Jesse Ryder is unlucky to miss out on a batting spot but Fleming's captaincy and batting in Asia gets the nod. Daniel Vettori, Jacob Oram, and CDG are unlucky to miss the allrounder spot (Cairns averages under 30 with the ball, so is ineligible).

If one doesn't consider Vettori an allrounder (as some surprisingly don't), the tail is suddenly a lot stronger.

Glenn Turner
Bert Sutcliffe
Andrew Jones
Ross Taylor
Stephen Fleming (c)
John R Reid
Ken Wadsworth (wk)
Tony McGibbon
Dick Motz
Ajaz Patel
Ewen Chatfield/Danny Morrison/Chris Martin

A problem with these xis is if your keeper is averaging under 25, and you can only pick one allrounder, you have a very weak tail. So your allrounder should be more like a 40-40 average player than a 30-31 sort of player. So more like 6 full-on batsmen are needed, one or two of who are useful-ish but no more with the ball...

Slater
Edrich J
Gower
Waugh M
de Silva
D'Oliveira
Oldfield *
Lee
Sarfraz N
Abdul Qadir
Srinath

I suspect India have the best side here with some good bowlers averaging over 30 and a solid core of batsmen averaging 40-43

If you bend the definition of bowler/allrounder a bit...

Sidhu, Gambhir, Amarnath M, Ganguly, Viswanath, Umrigar, Mankad, Mongia*, Srinath, Zaheer, Prasanna

England probably the next easiest as so many of their top batsmen averaged under 45...

Edrich, Washbrook, Gower, Cowdrey, Thorpe, D'Oliveira, Flintoff, Evans*, Titmus, Finn, Hoggard

(If Gower makes your ATG definitions then Graveney in or Cowdrey at 3 with Robin Smith at 4...)

I love that Oldfield’s stumping record still remains unchallenged after 85 years. Played in a spin heavy era sure, but was a hell of a keeper.

1st XI - Crowe averages too much.

2nd XI - There are lots of openers better than Jayasuriya and Mark Taylor. Turner for instance.

You've picked 2 allrounders when only one is eligible.

Hanif is better than any qualifying opener not named Greenidge.

Here's an attempt at a South African team.

Herschelle Gibbs
Jackie McGlew
Daryll Cullinan
Faf du Plessis
Ashwell Prince
Brian McMillan
Dave Richardson (wk)
Keshav Maharaj
Andre Nel
Joe Partridge
Paul Adams

Not a lot of quick bowling options. The one allrounder stipulation ruled out Klusener and Partridge is already some way on the list of wicket takers with 44, with the next highest being Michael Melle with 26.

Using your statistical guidelines I'd go :

1.Gordon Greenidge
2.Mark Taylor (C)
3.Graham Gooch
4.Zaheer Abbas
5.David Gower
6.Ben Stokes
7.Denesh Ramdin (WK)
8.Brett Lee
9.Zaheer Khan
10.Nathan Lyon
11.Matthew Hoggard
