Not as good as Anderson with the ball (although close to Trent Boult) + a 31 avg batsman. Cairns, in comparison was a 33.5 avg batsman.
Kapil was one of the top bowlers of his Era ( just below WI ATGs, Imran and Hadlee )
Kapil's reputation is way better than what his batting / bowling stats suggests.

26-27 avg bowler + 35 -37 avg batsman.. Thats how i rate him.

Dfuk? 21-22 AVG bowler. 38-39 AVG batsman. That's Reifel for me.

How can you just add 4-6 runs to his batting? And why would you deduct runs from his bowling like that? This kind of **** is a disservice to Kapil as it makes his already good stats seem to be not enough.

One thing in Kapil's favour which is also baffling is that despite of having such a lower average in Odi's he was consistently in top 10 to 12 batsmen in ODI's and top 5 to 10 bowlers in tests during the whole decade of 80s, you can't say the same about players with apparently similar averages.

Best batsman + best bowler + best fielder of the team, won WC as captain. ?

He was a top ranked batsman during mid 80s because he was averaging 30+ with a strike rate close to 110..!! Which is 40 avg at 140 strike rate in today's terms.

He was way better than a regular 29 / 31 avg player.

He certainly had really special moments with both bat and ball

How many people have taken an international 9 fer and hit multiple international 150s? Hadlee got one big daddy ton, but Dev got in one ODIs(at a world cup no less) and in tests

I get what people mean when they say he seemed like he should have had better stats. Obviously had a very high ceiling in him with bat and ball on his day

All the things considered, I would add 5-8% to his bowling average to indicate how good a bowler that he was. I wouldn't go ahead and say he was a 25 averaging bowler which would be a bit disrespectful to the players who actually achieved it.

With the bat, he was capable of truly special knocks and the bowling strength of the opposition hardly mattered in such cases. Had some great knocks against WI pace quartet of Roberts, Holding, Marshall and Garner in 1982-83. Then the fiery hundred against peak Donald in 1992-93 and the magnificent hundred in tied test 1986. It is his inconsistency which prevented him from averaging higher than 31, though he was certainly a better batsman than the average suggests. Not sure of the extent though.

but you can't just... do that...

I don't think viewing Kapil as a 27 average bowler is crazy in an overall assessment. He averaged that much at home on unsupportive pitches and until his late career dip that was what he was. If he was in Australia or England I think he would have ended around there.

However, no way was he a 35 average bat. The only point he was that good was in his first ten tests. After that, he never had the consistency. I dont see his batting improve regardless of which team he is in.
