What Australian Team would you select to tour South Africa

I can see from where some people are coming from when they call for Symonds to be dropped from the test side, but there is no way Symonds should be dropped from the ODI or T20 sides, he is arguably one of the best, if not the best, limited overs cricketer Australia currently have.
I didn't say that I want Symonds to be dropped. I didn't include him in the One Day squad because of the unknown time of his injury.

Would be surprised if the selectors picked a specialist batsmen at No 6 in David Hussey. Needs to work on his bowling to get a chance at six. Wouldn't surprise me if they take White as the 2nd all rounder/spinner. If they were going to pick North it would have been in the ODI squad where he is in amazing form. They went for White and expect they will go White again in Tests.

P Jaques/M Hayden
S Katich
R Ponting
M Hussey
M Clarke
A MacDonald/ A Symonds
B Haddin
M Johnson
N Hauritz
P Siddle
D Bollinger/S Clark

P Hughes
C White
S Tait
B Hifenhaus

I doubt they will pick Jaques as a reserve batsmen as he needs match time. Either for NSW or Australia. It will be either him or Hayden, I would be surprised if they pick Rogers and Hughes.

Tait will be in the squad if fit. If Symonds is fit they will probably pick a 2nd spinner and one of quicks will miss out Bollinger/Hilfenhaus. Not sure who is actually ahead in the peaking. Gut feeling says Hilfenhaus with Bollinger missing Twenty20 selection for Harris. Reckon if they thought of him as long term option they would have picked him in the squad, even if it just Twenty20. I reckon they see him as decent option now with injuries, but Tait, Siddle and Hilfenhaus are the long term bowlers.

As much as I like to think that Hayden's poor form is just a temporary blip on the radar, and that he's hitting the ball fine and has just been unlucky, I do have to accept some facts.
He's 37 years old and he just batted through an entire home test summer for an average of 16 with not a single half-century, plus we lost a series.
Not many players can go through a summer that poor at his age and stiff be in contention. For me his fate is largely in the hands of Phil Jaques, as Jaques is 29 so should just be entering the most productive phase of his career now and scored prolifically in his initial stint at test level. If Jaques comes back well and shows no lingering effects from his back injury, and were he to say make a hundred for NSW before the squad is announced, then its curtains for Hayden I'm afraid. As great a player as Hayden has been and as much as I get the feeling he's still capable of turning things around, one simply cannot justify leaving a fully fit and in form Jaques out of the side for Hayden after the summer Hayden has just had and given their respective ages.
If on the other hand Jaques is still not 100% fit or not in convincing touch, then I really think it's line ball as to whether they pick Hayden, Rogers or Hughes, and the decision should/will be largely influenced by how those three players look in domestic cricket in the lead-up to the squad being named.

Would not pick Symonds unless his form and fitness are both convincing upon his return from injury, and with Watson out I'd give his number six spot to a batsman, one of Hodge, Hussey or North. Not try and manufacture an allrounder.

I'd go with -
S Katich
P Jaques if he returns to cricket well, probably M Hayden if he dosen't
R Ponting
M Hussey
M Clarke
D Hussey
B Haddin
M Johnson
P Siddle
S Clark(if fit, A Noffke if he's not, side needs a reliable stock bowler)
N Hauritz (for the sake of consistency, not because I think he's good enough)
D Bollinger
M North (offers a spin option and I've always fancied him as the 'right type' to play international cricket)

Time to get rid of Hayden even if he has a few more performances, we need to move on and stop wasting time with him. A tough tour of South Africa could be just the thing Hughes needs to test himself kickstart his career. Highly disagree with any thoughts of including Rogers (who is 1. just not good enough even when in form and 2. past use-by date in terms of age), and Marsh (who is 1. picked originally due to IPL form which is ridculous and 2. has a non worthy FC record). I've always been an advocate of playing 7 batting specialists and 4 bowling specialists because you need players to stick to what they're good at. Hence David Hussey at 6 because he's been in form for quite a couple of seasons now and needs to be rewarded. He also has a couple of years of the now ailing Hodge who is 33ish.

Bowling is slightly more difficult. Four man pace attack is definitely the way to go, especially if the pitch is in favour and spinner isn't offering too much. If we really wanted to pick a spinner, then it MUST be an attacking one because the quality of the spinners we produce now is quite dire so a defensive spinner would have no role, he might be able to pick up 1 or 2 wickets per innings, but then again so could a bunch of part timers. A spinner must be able to take wickets so either Krejza or McGain with the latter pending fitness and or form. Because of this we need to cut Hauritz, even though would mean inconsistent selection, at this stage we have to cut our losses and accept that it was a mistake and move in the right direction, instead of trying to save face and defend the selection by picking him again.

The pace attack should have more variety should definitely a mixture of seamers and swingers would be ideal which is why Hilfenhaus, Noffke and Bracken have been included. I think we should have a system of rotation with this to find our best 4. Firstly we have to find the spots which are locked down by our best already, that is, Clark, Johnson and maybe Lee. So that way we have potentially 2 spots to play with. Siddle will probably bag one, and then we should try maybe Bollinger for 6-7 tests, if he doesn't work out, then try Hilfenhaus etc. At the moment and previously, it seemed they just picked out by random, i.e. when Noffke and Bollinger were leapfrogged last year.

A possibility of M Hussey opening?
If that was to be the case then I would have a team of:
M Hussey
Katich
Ponting
Clarke
D Hussey
McDonald
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
Clark
Bracken/Bollinger/ Hlfenhaus/

If not then I would have Hughes, Krejza,Hauritz and Nofke

Why would you make Hussey open? He's been great in the middle order for awhile now. Should just play a proper opener, rather than changing Hussey's role in the team when he is perfectly comfortable where he is atm.
