Simple exercise. What are the best individual test innings of these ATG bats:

Viv Richards

Tendulkar

Sobers

Steve Smith

Gavaskar

Dravid

Coronis

International Coach
From @Days of Grace list their highest rated innings are

Richards - 182* vs England 1981
Tendulkar - 214 vs Australia 2010
Sobers - 168 in Australia 1961
Smith - 144 in England 2019
Gavaskar - 221 in England 1979
Dravid - 233 in Australia 2003

Note: Tendulkar’s, Smith’s and Gavaskar’s innings did not feature on the latest iteration of the top 100, pretty sure his system has changed a fair bit since I saw those innings up there, so they may have changed.

fwiw Sobers > Dravid > Richards apparently

Viv - His twin fifties in Adelaide somewhere around early 80s. Absolutely hammered Lillee and Pascoe there.

Old timers may know better than I do.

Tendulkar - His 146 at Cape Town. Not an attacking knock but handled peak Steyn so well.

Sobers - Have to pass, don't know much about his batting.

Steve Smith - His 100 on a Pune rank turner.

Gavaskar - His 100 off 94 balls maybe a popular choice but Gavaskar himself rates his 100 at Old Trafford somewhere in the late 70s as his best. It came on a greentop against a quick Bob Willis.

His last knock of 96 against Pakistan is a good contender too.

Dravid - Either his twin fifties in Sabina Park or his 146 at The Oval.

The problem with Smiths hundred in pune is that he was very lucky and even he doesn't rate that knock.

Viv: 101 vs Australia 5th test 75/76. Greenidgde was reportedly scared to open and Viv was like f that let's go. He opened with Fredricks and scored 101 vs Lillee and Thomson (pre injury). It was in vain however, since Australia won that test and took an unassailable 4-1 lead in the series.

Viv- 61 in 36 balls vs India when WI were chasing 170 in 26 overs.

Tendulkar- 146 vs SA. Personal favourite is either the 169 in 1997 or 155 at bloemfentein though.

Sobers- 254 vs Australia if that counts

Smith- Edgbaston 144. But the ton in Dharamshala is his best one in terms of quality of stroke play and dominance

Gavaskar - 96 in his last innings on probably the most unplayable rank turner of all time.

Dravid - 233/180 vs Australia for the dire match circumstances. 190 vs NZ for quality of strokeplay on a helpful pitch.

Viv- i know he played many atg knocks imo that 67 vs pak in bridgetwon test 88 because wi were under pressure and close to lossing first series in a decade. Also faced young akram imran and qadir
Tendulkar- 136 vs pak unfrounately in losing cause but came on day 5 track vs peak saqlain wasim and waqar
Sobers- dont know much so 254 vs Australia
Smith- imo century vs bumrah in Brisbane test showed why he is atg. Played out peak bumrah and cashed on jadeja and reddy shows how adaptable he is. Also rate pune 100 and 36 * vs sa on Hobart green top
Gavaskar-221 vs peak botham and wills
And 96 on rank turner a masterclass how play spin
Dravid- 146 at vs peak broad and anderson

Viv – has so many, but I'll pick his 182* against peak Botham

Sachin – his 136 against Pakistan

Sobers – 254 vs Australia

Smith – Edgebaston 144 is the best I've seen from him

Gavaskar – 221 against peak Botham.

Dravid – 146 at the oval

As for Sachin, the 136 is up there but I think the one that is best is his 114 in Perth as a teen. Even he rates that on top. Just a phenomenal achievement.

Whatever it takes!!!
I honestly think Sachin's 100 in Bloemfontein in 2001-02 is his best test match knock, bating quality wise. Followed closely by Perth 1992. In fact, I can flip them around and still be ok.

There are other innings which have context and pressure but from sheer batsmanship perspective, I believe those 2 are a cut above any of his other knocks.

97 cape town and 98 basin reserve were equally good batsmanship
