What are the five strongest batting lineups who ever played?

kyear2

International Coach
Was trying to find a small overlap when the Windies had 2 of Headley, Sobers, Viv and Lara together

Sobers played his first test 3 months after Headley's Last

Viv played his first 6 months after Sobers last

And Lara debuted in tests before Viv retired from them but didn't actually play in a test with him

Pretty crazy how that worked out
That was crazy, a clear line of succession but how did they manage to have no overlap.

tbf Headley should never have played that last test. Yuck. It’d be like us calling back Voges for the Ashes.

Any England XI with Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, and Ames in it would be very strong. If they could then be supported batting wise by some of Duleepsinhji, Hendren, Jardine, Paynter, and Woolley if would be superb.
The only such game was Ames’s debut. Woolley, Wyatt, Leyland and Carr were the other batters.

Nah. Kallis retired in 2013 and QDK debuted in 2014.

Would need an Alviro Peterson or JP Duminy somewhere in the top 7. Also Ashwell Prince (better than QDK and Faf) retired in 2011.

Did those 7 play together? Very strong one
I think they did a bit, but I'm not sure if Amla was still in his prime. That except Alviro in for Elgar was the lineup for a bit longer.

If Amla was firing when they lined up that way then it's very similar to Ponting era Australia's in heaps of ways.

Smith and Hayden are really similar in style and output, so are Elgar and Langer. 3/ 4 of a pair of right handers - an ATG run machine and an elegant ATVG bat (even if swapped around in order in each of the two sides), a right handed ATVG at 5, a late bloomer who took to Tests like a duck to water at 6, and then an aggressive LH WKB at 7 who almost seems like a cheat code after getting through the epic top order.

Ponting's batting lineup was better, I think mostly because Elgar and QDK were just discount versions of Langer and Gilchrist, but still very very good.

Ah yeah you're right. I was thinking about Faf debut but de Kock debut was more relevant.
de Villiers was still keeping when Faf debuted, so the actual lineup around that time was something like:

1. Smith
2. Alviro
3. Amla
4. Kallis
5. de Villiers+
6. Faf
7. Duminy

Still right up there, but not quite as good as the Elgar and de Kock fantasy version posted above.

Collie Smith died from injuries sustained in a car accident in 1959 at the age of 26.

From Wikipedia:

The accident happened at 4:45am on 7 September, while he was travelling with his West Indian teammates Garry Sobers and Tom Dewdney. They were driving to London to attend a charity match, Sobers being the driver. The trip had already been delayed because of the traffic. The car ran into a 10-ton cattle truck driven by a Mr. Andrew Saunders. The accident happened on the A34 near Stone in Staffordshire.

Smith was sleeping in the back seat and was thrown forward. His injuries seemed minor initially and Smith even told Sobers, in reference to Dewdney, "Don't worry about me. Look after the big fellow." But his spine was injured badly and he soon went into a coma. He died without regaining consciousness three days later. His body was taken to Jamaica, where 60,000 people attended the funeral. His tombstone in Jamaica's May Pen Cemetery is engraved: "Keen Cricketer, Unselfish Friend, Worthy Hero, Loyal Disciple, Happy Warrior." Sobers and Dewdney were not seriously injured, suffering lacerations and bruises.

Sobers was issued with a notice of intended prosecution. Sobers pleaded not guilty, claiming that he had been dazzled by oncoming headlights. On 11 November at Stone Magistrates' Court, Sobers was found guilty of careless driving. The prosecutor said that Sobers had failed to take a bend and was in collision with a cattle truck travelling in the opposite direction. Sobers was fined £10 with £16 17s costs and had his licence suspended for a month.
