Match Report - Zimbabwe vs. West Indies - World Cup

Zimbabwe won the toss and went into bat first. The first wicket was G Flower for 2 - trapped in front by McGarrell - the score 1/3. Masakadza was solid, lasting the entire match, making 40-50 run partnerships with all the batsmen - and he was unbeaten at the end of the innings at 6/227, Masakadza on 126*, next best batsmen was Vermeulen on 29, McGarrell snagging 2/34.

It was decided that in an attempt to revive this opening partnership, they would bat moderately for the first 10 overs. Despite the slow runscoring, Sarwan was given out for LBW when he was on 3 - the score 1/15. Williams was next to fall for 8, the score only 2/23. The score had fallen to 6/149 in the 41st over - needing 79 runs in 9 overs, with Simmons (36*) and Adams (10*) batting. They made it to the final over where they required 12 from the last over - with Adams (24*) and Simmons (87*) still at the crease - it would be a wild last over. A disappointing last over which only produced 7 runs - Zimbabwe were 5 run victors - West Indies stuck on 6/222, with Simmons on 89*.

Overview:

Zimbabwe: 6/227 from 50 overs (Masakadza 126*, McGarrell 2/34)
West Indies: 6/222 from 50 overs (Simmons 89*, Mbangwa 2/30)

Result: Zimbabwe win by 5 runs.
Man of the match: H. Masakadza

Conclusion on last match: Zimbabwe vs. West Indies - World Cup "Very disappointed - especially with the openers again - I think it is time to seek alternatives. Well done to Simmons, though, very well played and proving his worth in the team."

Giving the openers one last chance, Dela Cruz moved Adams and Hooper up the order to see off the new ball before Lara, Chanderpaul and Gayle face:

R. Sarwan
S. Williams
C. Hooper
+J. Adams
*B. Lara
S. Chanderpaul
C. Gayle
P. Simmons
C. Stuart (1)
D. Ranmarine
N. McGarrell (2)

Prediction: Pakistan vs. West Indies "This is a match that we must win, no doubt about it. I am confident that Hooper and Adams can come in and bat well enough to keep the runrate around 4-5 after 20 overs, but we will see soon enough."

Match Report - Pakistan vs. West Indies - World Cup

Lara won the toss again, and decided he would field once more. A start that saw very few wickets but very few runs led the Pakistanis to 1/118 from 31 overs before the first wicket - Khan out for 60, caught behind. A ridiculous blitz by the ***** at the end saw them post an impressive 1/275 - with Anwar 126 not out at the end. Ramnarine took the only wicket, finishing with 1/43.

0/29 in the fourth over, the West Indies were looking good, until Williams fell victim to Waqar for 17, the score 1/29. Sarwan fell in the 11th over for 23, the score 2/50. Some absolutely disgraceful batting saw the West Indies all out for 136, Khan taking 6/34.

Overview:

Pakistan: 1/275 from 50 overs (Anwar 126*, Ramnarine 1/43)
West Indies: 136a.o. from 27.1 overs (Sarwan 23, Khan 6/34)

Result: Pakistan win by 139 runs.
Man of the match: S. Anwar

Good to see you've got King and Rose - IMO the best WIndies pacers on ICC (yeah, well, I did tripe with them too).

Good story too :)

Hmm decided I would continue this. There may be a bit of a gap in terms of what the date is though.. the England tour... it's been a few years actually. It's 2007, and we're in New Zealand, having just played two friendlies. Ready for the first ODI :D

West Indies lineup:

We batted first, on a pitch that looked good to bat on. Things looked shaky when Sarwan was dismissed for 6, soon joined by Chanderpaul (6), however Samuels (32) and Gayle (81) put on 50 runs in a gritty partnership. Hinds went quickly for 2 runs, the score 4/83, and then Gayle and Cummins (41) combined well for a 59 run partnership. Going further down the order, the only other score was Nagamootoo (37*) in the teams 8/210, setting New Zealand a target of 211 at 4.2 runs per over.

King struck early, trapping both Englefield (0) and Sinclair (12) lbw. Wickets fell regularly throughout the innings and the two leg spinners, Nagamootoo (10-0-34-2) and Ramnarine (8-0-22-1) managed to slow the stem of runs effectively to allow King (9-1-40-4) the luxury of some aggressive bowling, which paid off as he picked up 4 wickets. Chris Gayle completed a wonderful match, with 81 (119) and bowling figures of 10-0-50-2. The pick of the New Zealand batsmen was Vincent with a swashbuckling 43*, as his team crept to 187 all out.

West Indies - 8/210 (50 overs)
Gayle 81 (119)
Tait 4/39 (10)

New Zealand - 187a.o. (47 overs)
Vincent 43*
King 4/40 (9)

West Indies win by 23 runs
MoM: R King (DNB & 4/40)

Very pleased with the match, we have struggled with ODI's in recent years and it is a positive sign that we won the first match so soundly.

Unchanged lineup

We lost the toss and were sent into the bowl. New Zealand begun solidly, until King struck and took the wicket of Bell (14) to make the score 1/31. Englefield went through partners quickly, saying goodbye to Sinclair (15), Mills (0) and McMillan (15) in rather quick succession. However, Richardson (37) came and provided some assistance in a 70 run partnership, though was bowled by Ramnarine, which made the score 5/152. The innings finished without any real bang, Englefield the clear crop of the batsmen with an effortless 92* (136) in the teams 7/202. Gayle proved again his multi talentedness with 10-0-39-2, but Ramnarine taking the cake with 10-0-32-4.

Chasing 203 at 4.1rpo, we were never expecting any real difficulty. Sarwan went early with 8, but Samuels (69) was destructive and Chanderpaul (70*) strung together a 114 run partnership and from there the team cruised to a 6-wicket victory, Chanderpaul the standout batsman, also assisted by Hinds (29).

New Zealand - 7/202 (50 overs)
Englefield 92* (136)
Ramnarine 4/32 (10)

West Indies - 4/203 (46.5 overs)
Chanderpaul 70* (124)
Samuels 69 (87)

West Indies win by 6 wickets
MoM: D Ramnarine (DNB & 4/32)

Once again very happy, now we have won the 3 match series and will hopefully maintain some momentum for the Tests.

Unchanged lineup

We lost the toss on a pitch that was batter friendly and were sent in to bat. Sarwan (49) and Samuels (68) stayed at the crease until the 33rd over, batting slowly yet steadily, giving the New Zealand bowlers headaches. It was then sent out to them that they were to up the ante a notch - wickets falling quite rapidly from this point, Gayle (2) and Hinds (9) failing but the team was brought up by inspired batting from captain Chanderpaul (41), younger Cummins (24) and keeper McLean (24). The team was eventually bowled out for 251 in the final over, setting a respectable 252 for New Zealand.

A target that was defendable by all means, we were confident of another victory. Bell (38) and Englefield (63) wasted no time in a blistering 81 run partnership which ended in the 15th over, Ramnarine taking a crucial wicket to stem the runs. Mills (21) and Richardson (28) looked in good nick but went out through outrageous shots. A collapsed followed Richardson's wicket, the score going from 5/173 to all out for 194, Nagamootoo taking 4/25 in his 5.1 overs. Each bowler contributed, King managing figures of 6-0-30-2, Gayle again adding some to the bowling with 10-1-46-2, a maiden that was well earnt and applied much pressure on the batsmen.

West Indies - 251a.o. (49.4 overs)
Samuels 68 (111)
Vettori 3/39 (10)

New Zealand - 194a.o. (41.1 overs)
Englefield 63 (78)
Nagamootoo 4/25 (5.1)

West Indies win by 57 runs.
MoM: M Nagamootoo (2 & 4/25)

A convincing series win and a sure confidence booster for the test series.

New Zealand vs West Indies, 1st Test

Here's the lineup for the first test, with their career test averages. (Trying to show some foresight: Chanderpaul, Nagamootoo, Ramnarine, King and Dillon are all in their thirties, so we'll need to blood some youngsters, specifically bowlers, sooner or later)

We won the toss and batted on a batter-friendly pitch. Sarwan (13) and Samuels (28) got off to starts but failed to capitalize. Gayle and Chanderpaul were then united and the two piled on the runs in a 108-run stand, which put the team in a reasonable positon at 3/176, Chanderpaul gone for 38 after being bowled by Franklin. Gayle (81) batted on with Hinds (41), before he too was out thanks to a Mills catch off Franklin, however Horace (19), McLean (53) and Nagamootoo (25*) added some sting which carried the visitors to 332 all out. O'connor took 4/49 for New Zealand.

Robertinho

Cricketer Of The Year
Captain Chanderpaul handed the new ball to King and Dillon to open the bowling. The wickets were scarce, but King was all too happy with striking Vincent, who was on 20* at the time, and forcing him to retire hurt, the score a reasonable 0/50. Nagamootoo and Ramnarine came on in tandem, and struck in his 6th over, trapping Englefield in front for 35, the score 1/88. It took some time and the West Indies players toiled in the field, but Dillon produced the goods, bowling Sinclair who was looking dangerous on 85. The bowlers struggled, but Mills was deceived by a Ramnarine wrong'un and clean bowled for 23, the score 3/242. 2 balls later, Ramnarine struck again, this time getting the rough and just nicking the edge of McMillan's bat to be safely taken by McLean for 74, the score 4/243, and the bowlers finally looking to be on top.

Nagamootoo applied the right pressure and frustrated Richardson into skying a top spinner, safely taken by Sarwan, New Zealand only 5/257. He struck again, deceiving Franklin (4) and cleaning up off stump, making the scoreboard read 6/271, Nagamootoo with a handy 3/62. The leg spinners continued their field day, Ramnarine trapping Tuffey (4) leg before, and making O'connor (0) drag one onto his stumps. The West Indies would be very angry, however, that they allowed Fleming (87*) and Drum (12) put on a 70-run last wicket stand, carrying the innings to 360 all out. Ramnarine (37-5-129-4) and Nagamootoo (36.4-5-74-4) were the destroyers. However, New Zealand would be pleased with their 28 run lead.

Robertinho

Cricketer Of The Year
Sarwan and Samuels begun in reasonable style, Sarwan (26) contributing most of the runs in a 35-run partnership. Gayle was quickly trapped in front by Tuffey for 5, and Samuels (24) soon followed, the score reduced to a worrying 3/82. A real skipper's knock by Chanderpaul and a wonderful innings by Hinds saw the pair put on 143 runs, until Chanderpaul was bowled by Franklin for 81. Hinds went out soon after for 90, and Horace exploded with a quickfire 32 off 35 balls, which included 4 fours and 1 six.

Nagamootoo added some sting to the tail, with a solid 22*, but eventually the West Indies were 333 all out, with a solid lead of 306, a score that is definitely defendable. Franklin took 4/55 and Tuffey 4/83.
