That really was nothing. Pretty sure no sane person in the world was angry at our number 11 for only lasting 50 something balls when batting for the draw.
Jimmeh was gutted though, particularly seeing as he'd battled to take things so close.

People care more about tests than non tests and Ashes more than tournaments but think Flibberty is overplaying it. It was a world final ffs, it's worth more than a test against Sri Lanka in the summer will be (no offence Sri Lanka).
I think the press think we overachieved by reaching the final so can't see them getting on his back for losing the game in a format that most of the time the press don't give a toss about.

Really feel for Stokes and England and tbh I would rather see a player who s gutted at losing rather than someone who shrugs it off..in relation to the Samuels comments, Stokes certainly gives out the verbals so has to take it back too if that's the case- having said that its the press making a hoo ha about it not him so it has to be taken with a pinch...

the players cared. a lot. That's all that matters
actually the original contention was that the amount of stick he would get from fans/media wouldn't be as significant, so it would be how much the fans & media "cared" that would "matter" in that case

just saying

I get your point, but really the original contention of this thread was actually whether he'd be able to recover from this. Whilst no one likes being potted on Twitter and in newspapers, I imagine he'd feel like crap because he let his teammates down in an important game, not so much because the Daily Mail or whomever has a picture of him calling him Ben Chokes.

Remember a few years ago, Stokes to Faulkner, 25 off 10 needed, he bowls two length balls in a row, gets smacked into the stands. T20 final, he bowls 4 half volleys in a row, no variation, and same result every ball. Is he a poor learner, or just really crappy at bowling at the death?

Don't think he's ever going to be much of a ODI bowler. He'll do a job but bowling at the death just ain't his bag, I think. You don't need someone who's combative, you need someone who's crafty.

Think the noise of his achievements in the future will drown any sorrows from this one. Bloke's a jet, this'll be a footnote.

True. Stokes is very talented and works hard (I'm assuming). But intelligence/thinking isn't exactly his forte.

Is this really the case? Genuine question btw, I thought T20 was really popular in England.

Its more popular than some are suggesting on this forum.

Here we go.

The ratings for the final are a bit higher than thought - ITV Media is reporting 1,123,000 - reason for difference may be because ITV Media is reporting a 2pm programme start (whereas I thought it was meant to be 1.30pm?).

Anyway it's interesting to note how the cricket did against Sky's other sport:

ICC World T20 Final (2pm) - 1,123,000 (8.3%)
Super Sunday - Leicester/Southampton (12.30pm) - 955,000 (10.6%)
Super Sunday - Man Utd/Everton (3.30pm) - 843,000 (5.6%)
Bahrain Grand Prix (3.30pm) - 605,000 (4.1%)

From 3.30pm to 6.30pm all 3 events were running simultaneously (ie T20, Man Utd/Everton and F1) - thus for those 3 hours the combined total average audience would have been a bit above 2.6m (given the cricket would have rated higher post 3.30pm than its overall average).

woah that's racist.

wait, he isn't black.

you're good, TJB.
I remember being called classist when suggesting that Stokes might not be the sharpest bulb in the box, so there's always that to fall back on. That said this was shortly after he punched a locker and broke his hand, so I think I was all clear anyway.

Yeah but this is probably a newspaper that puts WWE results as a sporting headline ... lol
This is the daily express, my mum buys this paper, they don't really do sport full stop.

Two New Zealand radio hosts have been suspended after broadcasting a private conversation with England cricketer Ben Stokes' mother despite telling her it was off air. Radio Hauraki hosts Matt Heath and Jeremy Wells took aim at Ben Stokes after he was hit for four consecutive sixes in the final over of the T20 World Cup Final as the West Indies came back from the dead to win. Friends and family of Ben Stokes' mother informed her of the nasty comments, and so she called the radio station to complain.
The station believed Mrs Stokes was calling about an unrelated segment, and put her live on air.

EDITED TRANSCRIPT:

Deborah: I wanted to speak to somebody off air please.

Matt: You wanted to speak to somebody off air?

Deborah: Yes

Matt: OK. You’re off air.

Deborah: OK, that’s fine. Look, I’m just ringing in regards to the program that’s on air, I think it’s Matt and Jeremy? I just wanted to basically I guess put forward my thoughts in regards to the way they have bagged the English cricketer Ben Stokes this morning.

Matt: Yes

Deborah: When they have never met him, they don’t know him and maybe if they had tempered the inappropriate remarks and name calling with some quotes of some supportive tweets he’s received from some very well-known cricketers and just your ordinary Joe Bloggs cricket supporters, maybe ...

Matt: Could you slow down a bit, I’m writing this complaint down. I’ve got to get it through to Matt and Jeremy. OK cool.

Deborah: I don’t know whether they realise he was actually born and bred in New Zealand and quite frankly has family all over the country. And for those who listen to your station, for them to sit and listen to their cousin and their grandson being bagged like that is absolutely unconscionable and I’m his mother and I’m totally brassed off.

Matt: You’re brassed off are you?

Deborah: Oh yes I am brassed off.

Matt: Well he’s a great cricket player, he’s amazing.

Deborah: Are you being smart here?

Matt: He’s an amazing cricket player. He’s incredible. He does our country proud and geez we’d love to have him playing for New Zealand. He’s an amazing, amazing cricket player. Incredible.

Deborah: I get that, but what I’m saying is, for my family — and a lot of my family have rung me and said ‘have you heard this, Deb?’ — I’m just really disappointed. Say those things and then temper it with some positives. Have a look on Twitter, see the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Tino Best, Graham Onions — all of those people giving him their support because they know that tomorrow is another day.

Matt: You’re a lovely woman Debs and thanks for call and we’ll make sure that gets righted on the show. You have a great day.

I know this will not be a popular post, but that's not important.

I first want to say that I don't hold what Mark Nicholas wrote against him. He has offered a well written and I assume heartfelt apology and that should be the end of the matter from his perspective.

But these not so subtle insensitive jabs, made by persons who have no idea what it's like to black in a still very racist world. Racism still exists (just look at the US Republican front runner) and it's not funny or amusing.

While.neither is particularly charitable or sporting, there is a difference between labeling an individual not the shapes to tool in the shed (and again, definitely not condoning that charge either) and calling an entire team brainless.

We are a race that is still seen in some quarters as inferior and are reminded of same by these segments at every possible opportunity. If you have not experienced it, please don't comment on it.

Yes, some of Sammy's comments could have been better timed, but so have some of the comments here.

Quite frankly it has been quite disappointing and a little sad.

Well, Stuart Broad got hit for six sixes by Yuvraj a few years back and I'd say he's a better bowler now than he was before that incident (not that that incident was the cause for the improvement).

You need to have a fair bit of self belief to even get to the level these blokes play at. Sometimes that's just the game - you have your great highs and very deep lows. That's sport. I'd be surprised if Stokes was permanently scarred by what happened in terms of his future performances, but you just never know for sure.
