Hmmm.... I would say both played some alrightish English teams. No top tier Greats (except an old Boycott for Lillee), but a number of very good ones, even some ATVGs in Gower, Gooch, Smith, etc.
This one needs more investigation, if Lillee took more quality wickets than hadlee in these 3 countries combined or not ?

Dennis Lillee Successful Foreign Tours : 1) Australia tour of New Zealand in 1976/77 - Lillee took 15 Wickets @20.80 (Highest Wicket Taker of the Series) Won this Series 1-0 solely because of match winning performance of Lillee in 2nd Test at Auckland - took 11 Wickets @11.18. 2) Ashes 1972 in England - England leads Ashes 2-1 but in 5th and Last Test at Oval Lillee takes 10 Wickets @18.1 and series ends in a draw. 3) Ashes 1975 - First Test at Birmingham Australia won the First Test due to the heroics of Lillee taking 7/60 in both innings combined. Australia won the series 1-0. 4) In 1981 Botham’s Ashes Australia won the First Test because of Lillee’s 3/34 & 5/46. Conclusion : Dennis Lillee won 4 Tests for Australia 🇦🇺 - 3 in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and 1 in New Zealand 🇳🇿. (Lillee Helped Australia to win a series in both England and New Zealand)

One thing I dont think has has been mentioned about Lillee's only Pakistan tour is the home umpires. Was huge news at the time that Pakistan umpires refused to give lbw to touring teams, while giving easy lbw to the Pakistan bowlers.

On that 1980 tour, Pakistan took 11 wkts lbw (24.4% of wkts) to Australia's 1 lbw (4.0%). Pretty hard to take wkts on roads when one important form of dismissal has been taken out of the equation. As it was, Pakistan only lost 25 wkts total in those 3 tests.

Didn't start then, and certainly didn't end with that tour either.

Muralitharan took 6 wickets per match, should that place him ahead of everyone?
Don't think going only by WPM does anything. Plus, Wasim had good bowlers in his team, that explains his low WPM.
4 wickets (3.98) is not exceptional.

for a pace bowler/ 5 wkts is unmatched except by Hadlee.
Marshall had more competition within his team than Wasim; he still managed 4.5 wkts. So did McGrath.

WK per M is an important stat. It is a clear indicator of a bowler's ability to bowl out the opposition single handedly.

23 five fers in 70 tests @5 WPM will always make Lillee's name come up in the first round while ranking the fast bowlers of the 20th century (and 21st).

Clarrie Grimmett has a similar average and WPM to Lillee FTR and played in much flatter home wickets and against frankly some of the Very Best batting line-ups ever assembled.

I like this new stat of how many times a bowler took 5 or more wkts per match 😀

- Lillee did it in 38 of 70 Tests, so 54.3%
- Hadlee did it in 43 of 86 tests, so 50.0%
- Akram did it in 46 of 104 tests, so 44.2.%
