Wasim Akram was an ATG bowler. He will easily fit in one of the top 3 hypothetical XIs in history. His batting comes as a bonus and makes him a greater cricketer than some of the other ATG bowlers who only had skill in one discipline.

But if some one needs to extrapolate as much as 12-15% to make him look a better bowler than every one else, which he clearly wasn't, that is where the problem lies. Given the circumstances he played in, most people won't object if his averages are adjusted within a reasonable limit like 3-5%.
5% is more than enough to beat McGrath in every category after a similar length of career.

Funny thing is most people here would have rated Akram higher if retired after 1997.

I'm curious to know why the bold doesn't apply to Donald vs Ambrose then. Donald had far better team, batting, fielding team, played far less than Ambrose, yet you rate Donald higher...
It does, but even then Donald is better for me. And i dont consider longevity factor here, because its not Donald's fault. (FYI Mike Procter is my 4th greatest cricketer after Sobers, Bradman and W.G )

To each his own (when it's convenient) I guess....

For this to happen, Mcgrath would have had to retire around the same time as well.
The issue is that everyone has declines at the end of their careers, that part is always forgotten. And I'm not saying all are equal, but don't see anyone flying the flag for Ponting the same way.

Most of us experienced most of the careers we are discussing, so don't believe we have forgotten the peaks etc, this **** is baked in as it was for Viv, Sachin, even Marshall etc..

I was talking about Akram only.

( Even if it was a comparison with Mcgrath, you can not be sure.. With slight difference (0.7) in avg Akram will get lot of supporters, factoring the conditions, Aura, Skills.. Etc.
Its the " less than 4 wpm " thing.. That affected opinions heavily.)

The thing with Sachin and Marshall is that even with their declines, they have better stats than everyone else. Viv is unique in that the reason he's rated so highly is his strike rate, so his decline in his averages didn't really affect why he was rated so highly in the first place. If Ponting had a strike rate like Viv's, he would be rated a lot higher and in the same tier as Viv/Sachin/Lara. Also if Ponting didnt have that average of 26 in India, he would probably be rated higher as well. That's just how I see it.

Akram will be the undisputed number 1 if the poll is conducted among Akram, Donald, Mcgrath and Ambrose ?
To be honest you're right.
But then on the other hand, Lillee would be the undisputed number 1 if the poll was between Lillee, Imran, and Hadlee. I reckon you could throw Marshall in there as well and Lillee would come close and that would be ridiculous.

Lillee is a legitimate GOAT candidate IMO.
