Pleased that NZ won, though it's just a warm up so not too much should be read into it. The good bits for me were that Ryder and Broom scored runs after both had been struggling recently, Bond didn't break and we managed a high score *shock!* batting first.

I guess India will play better with Sachin and Gambhir in the side. Nayar should play instead of Yusuf Pathan and Mishy should replace RP Singh.

are all locked in at the top.
But the bowling besides Bond seems to be up in the air.
Mills, Tuffey, Butler and now Patel are all trying to make a case.
If the pitch has a bit of spin in at, as seemingly this one did then Patel would be one of the options. Though considering that this is South Africa that shouldn't happen too often. I'm really hoping we play both Tuffey and Mills together as it would give us a pretty snazzy seam attack.

Was having a crack at the NZ supporters (of which there are a lot of) who continue to tell us Broom is no good, despite having limited opportunities. I've been saying Broom should be in the side for 3 years!

I probably should have added the rolled eyes smiley to my previous post or something.

Stoked he did well in that game. Obviously just a warmup and one good innings doesn't make a player, but he has all the tools to produce at international level.

Broom is probably our best bet for number 6 TBH. The only other players I could see succeeding there are Ryder and a player like Kitchen (though I'd like to see him through another domestic season).

I find it weird batting a specialist bat at 7, especially when Broom is more of a proper batsman than a hitter. Sure he obviously connected with a few against India in the warmup but his hitting/ slogging hasn't looked very good when I've watched before that. I guess they want to give Oram time to play himself in at 6, but not really sold on that.

In fact in general it's very odd that we have McCullum, Ryder, Guptill and Taylor who are ALL hitters/ strokemakers in the top four, followed by Elliott, Oram, Broom, Vettori who are not really hitters. Two are 'nurdlers', Broom is more of a normal batsman and Oram can hit but is a slow starter and is out of form.

So what happens when we need to consolidate at the start, or hit at the end of an innings?

I wouldn't mind Baz back at 7, but his record opening (not facing the first ball ) is alot better than his record @ 7 (even without that game where he bashed around Ireland).
Plus there is 10 guaranteed Powerplay overs at the start.

If he moved down, how would the order go?
Move everyone up one or stick Broom in @ 3?

Polo - still think Broom is average (not rubbish) scoring runs in a warm up means diddly squat.

I dont believe for a second he will do anything like yesterday in the real matches although i hope to stand pleasantly corrected

Well i hope they do. But from what i have seen recently that india is finding it extremely hard to even get close to chasing big totals. The compaq series was one example, true they won against NZ but they only chased 160 odd runs. Against sri lanka before the finals they were completely thrased when chasing 300+ runs even when they had tendulkar as an opener and again yesterday against NZ. What i am trying to say is Indias weakness is not only their bowling atm but their batting is also not firing when they are exerted in a bit of pressure.

I agree about Ryder likely being better down the order. Only problem is that would leave McCullum and Guptill opening together who are too similar IMO. Followed by who, Broom at 3?

No, I don't have a solution . No reordering I can think of fits perfectly.

As others have said, can't see McCullum moving back down the order due to his vice-captaincy. Franklin would be a good hitter at 7 or 8, but as his bowling at the moment would be fodder it's pretty hard to select him.
