Yeah, You're a Root hater, he rates Root afaik.I’ll take it as a compliment. I’m sure we do have some differing opinions though.

Eh. He’s not as bad as a lot of the Poms. e.g Cook, Anderson, Pietersen, Broad, Stokes, Bairstow, Swann.Yeah, You're a Root hater, he rates Root afaik.
would you like Root if he was a criminal like Barrington?Eh. He’s not as bad as a lot of the Poms. e.g Cook, Anderson, Pietersen, Broad, Stokes, Bairstow, Swann.
But he’s still a little bit of a dick. You guys gotta get some cool guys. I miss being able to Root for an English player.
There is far more value to having 1-2 great slips than anyone great in any other positions. 3rd slip plus, I don't think it makes that much difference. Are they objectively more important in the sense that the absence of one affects more than others? Sure.
But I think it's easier to find a baseline competent slip catcher than in the covers/gully who will be both a good ground fielder and catcher.
The marginal value of an exceptional slip catcher to take blinders is a bit exaggerated IMO because most here assume the alternative is an exceptionally bad 90s Pakistan slip, which is not the reality for most teams.
Yeah we are weighing frequency of a blinder versus the runs saved and somewhat less frequent blinders of a cover/gully. I think folks may underestimate how many runs an excellent ground fielding op saves, and the pressure the build that leads to wickets and run outs.A second slip in particular who can take blinders is a fairly big upgrade on one who can't, in a way that doesn't apply to other positions.
The answer here is really a no of blinders; because both drops way too many sitters.Kohli is decent in the slips, Smith is great. How much more do you guys think that Smith has added to his cordon than Kohli?
?would you like Root if he was a criminal like Barrington?
what? did you not know Barrington's story?
Go on, educate me on Ken Barrington please.what? did you not know Barrington's story?
Barrington kidnapped a pakistani umpire once because he and his friends thought he was biased toward Pakistan and thus he and his friends kidnapped him, took him to a hotel room and beat the crap out of him.Go on, educate me on Ken Barrington please.
A cover fielder doesn't get the same number of opportunities, and they are sitters more often than not.Yeah we are weighing frequency of a blinder versus the runs saved and somewhat less frequent blinders of a cover/gully. A top ground fielder saves runs, supports bowlers, takes blinders and gets run outs. I don't think we should just say slips are most important.
Ok but cover also deals with saving runs and affecting runouts. Simply more impact.A cover fielder doesn't get the same number of opportunities, and they are sitters more often than not.
Gully is basically a name for a really wide slip.
Run outs are negligible. Maybe 1 a game for the entire team combined vs more than 1 catch a game for your best slip.Ok but cover also deals with saving runs and affecting runouts. Simply more impact.
In limited overs covers are more important. But Tests, no chance … wickets are more important.Ok but cover also deals with saving runs and affecting runouts. Simply more impact.
Run outs are also wickets. Not to mention wicket pressure by blocking runs.In limited overs covers are more important. But Tests, no chance … wickets are more important.
Slip catches atleast happen thrice the amount of run outs every match.Run outs are also wickets. Not to mention wicket pressure by blocking runs.
We aren't talking total slip catches. We are talking the extra blinders a top slipper will catch versus extra run outs and it's much closer.Slip catches atleast happen thrice the amount of run outs every match.
and getting a wicket has more emphasis than giving a wicket pressure by blocking runs.
Yeah duh but we aren't talking the absence of a slip. Just the value of an elite slip versus elite cover. And your slips are also stopping boundaries.
