Actually Gooch has a higher average.

Purely as an opener is difficult. I can’t put him up with the top modern guys since he doesn’t have the longevity. He’s only really played ~4 years as an opener, and last year was dumpster fire (literally Kohli level). Definitely below Smith/Hayden/Sehwag/Cook.

He belongs somewhere in the next tier down but I’m unsure of where exactly.
