It all comes full circle... using my last pick for:

Javed Miandad

Same player I picked last in the first "ODI Schoolyard Pick" I did on this forum with James90, back in 2006 (my team then also happened to have Murali and Hadlee as well).

Have 2.5 points left to retain, so donut steel.

So my final thoughts on this, are as follow:

Wow, that was a more "involved" draft than I was expecting, having run that. And the having only 6 players thing didn't help that, as there was even less time between rounds, before having to generate new ones, and just updating the thing. Couldn't be helped though, as I didn't have too much time, but did want to try out this idea. Thanks to everyone who participated, and made the picking choices so interesting. People were on the whole very responsive, and fair minded in dealing with a new format and unconventional game size, so kudos for that. I guess on the plus side, we did end up with much stronger teams on the whole, than we normally get to see in 16ish person drafts, so yeah. :)

I think that the overall format had merit, but I think there were too many points provided, and this also had the unintended consequence of making the last round a bit anticlimactic, as everyone could simply hold their picks. Mathematically, I think there can only be a maximum of half as many steals as there are players, in a given round. So yeah, I'd bring the number of points down to something like 5. 3 or 4 to begin, and then +1 or +2 at the start of the 6th round. Also, I think a big part of the advantage of stealing was just moving yourself significantly up the round selection queue, although stealing from the person in front of you who just notified you was pretty common and convenient too. I might want to make stealing more than 1 position up from yours cost an extra half point, to be 1.5 points, but not sure about that totally, as might shake up the balance between stealing and blocking steals (want it to be much easier to steal, and harder to block).

Recapping my team:

01. Bill Lawry
02. Matthew Hayden
03. Everton Weekes
04. Jacques Kallis (3-5)
05. Javed Miandad *
06. Joe Root
07. Kumar Sangakkara +
08. Ravichandran Ashwin (4-5)
09. Richard Hadlee (1)
10. Muttiah Muralitharan (3-4)
11. Allan Donald (2)

So the idea with this team, is to be absolutely dominant at home, while having the quality to be competitive away from home. The home conditions are obviously the subcontinent. First thing that pops to mind is having the pair of spinners, and off spinners at that, which could be counted as a negative in less turning conditions. But with Murali's freak turn, and Ashwin's variations, these two have tended to be more than capable (especially Murali) of overcoming such circumstances. And on a spinning track, gosh Ashwin might be even better than Murali in that circumstance. TL;DR, these aren't your typical off-spinners bowling in tandem:

But the whole team is full of busters in the subcontinent, with almost all of them (with the exceptions of the seamers in Pakistan) having exceptional records in the subcontinent, and the batsmen being phenomenal players of spin.

Right from the opening partnership of Hayden and Lawry being a complementary contrast of bash and block, the entire team alternates between dogged grafters and vicious stroke-makers. For tougher bowling circumstances, I'm liking the ability of Hadlee and Murali in particular to bowl marathon seam or spin spells as required, hopefully mitigating the use of too many Kallis overs as the 5th bowling option unless conditions favor him. Team does #batdeep too with Ashwin and Hadlee at 8 and 9, so there's that.

Finally there's the captain selection of Miandad. He has a phenomenal record for someone who was overlooked for that role until the very end of his career. The only real choice out of these to lead this side, but one I'm more than comfortable with.

I do wonder how the team might have looked if my gambit of stealing a predicted first pick of Sobers, had actually come off. Would have probably ended up with something like a Sobers/Pollock allrounders core, but not sure if the team would have been much better overall. Happy to get Hadlee as it turns out, and it was nostalgic to recreate a core of some of the same players as my first 2006 ODI 2 person draft with James90, including a last pick of Miandad. Probably going to be a long, long while until I will participate in another draft, so seems like a good a way as any to cap it off.

Thanks again to everyone who signed up, and made this thing so enjoyable. I'll get the teams together and make a voting thread probably tomorrow, so look out for that. Got to sleep soon though, so cheers all! :)

Thanks @shortpitched713 . This was a good draft and I did like the stealing concept.

1. Definitely needs more players to play the draft. The list of CW rated ATGs are limited and with 6 drafters, we did not cross that limit at all. Once we increase the number of players, a lot of stealing will start with the supply being much lesser than demand
2. And also, a more open stealing will be good. Currently, the stealing rule was very restrictive due to which very few steals were done. One should be able to steal any number of players at any time, with their points getting lost in that process.

I think this ended up being a GOAT fest and the voting will be close as most teams are quite strong. I think one change I'd make to the format is to have cuts instead of steals. That way you reduce the pool potentially and it will cost you if you want to keep your player. It introduces an element of trying to mess with someone else's team though, so I'm not sure it will work here as most drafters are too nice.
