*Unofficial* New Zealand Black Caps Thread

Interesting NZ XI side, no Robinson Foxcroft Hay Smith Foulkes who were the inexperienced players in NZ ODI T20I tour to Sri Lanka in Nov (also Clarkson who I assume is still injured), so perhaps all five will be in NZ T20I squad announced Monday. McLachlan ahead of Chu?

NZ A white ball batters from last season Kelly, Robbie O'Donnell, Bruce, Leo Carter, Solia not selected. Perhaps selection tactics switching to younger players?

This stood out for me. Whatever it's based on, it isn't runs.

I'd be amazed if it's anything other than Otago and CD not wanting to release players. If that's not the case the inclusion of Kapur over Lennox is also puzzling.

Note that this will be the return for Carter and Lister too.

The fact that Katene Clarke is in there, who averages 9 in his last 10 innings (I did the math on cricinfo real easily) means it's not a bonafide side. Didn't he average something similar last year?

Unless I'm mistaken there hasn't been an nz xi one day warmup since Netherlands in 2022? So hard to get a feel for the side in terms of composition and direction.

It's a team NZ are providing to let the opposition have a warmup, it's probably part of the bilateral agreement that it has to be a decent strength side. It's not meant to be a NZ A side.

Sure NZ selectors will look to get what they can out of it where they can, but it'll be based primarily on player availability and workload. We probably shouldn't over analyse it so much lol.

Oh for sure. The last nz xi team was basically a bunch of provincial A players because the real ones were all playing PS iirc. Which has been pretty representative of NZ XI teams in the past which have often had U19 players or fringe domestic guys to give the oppo some middle time as opposed to a full blown A / pseudo nz 2nd xi.

This one is a bit more powered compared to those sides though and some of these players are definitely close to debuting or getting back into the black caps side.

Yeah I think the fact that it looks better than usual has prompted most of discussion about who wasn't picked. But it's probably still mostly based on availability and which provinces wanted more cricket for various players than anything else.

But yeah even beyond that, even if everyone was available it was always gonna be a bit more youth focused than a NZA side. Unless they were going to be asked to lead or be VC, Carter and Solia weren't gonna be picked for something like this, for example. And it doesn't really point to a change in selection philosophy because it never would have happened in these circumstances IMO.

Yeah I take your point certainly. That's the column that holds a lot of weight now, right? Played 9 matches and nothing of any significant value, but is now an NZ player. It's a very interesting situation is all I'm saying.

The @Prince EWS BOSH factor is now going to be a certifiable selection metric.

I threw up in my mouth a bit saying that, and just ruined @thierry henry 's Xmas (although I'm led to imagine from the first day of the cricket season he dons a green Grinch suit and doesn't remove it until April)

Agree. Josh Clarkson has played years for CD, finally got a shot, but has missed out.

Jacobs certainly hits a big ball though

While I have Latham and Jacobs on the same row for the convenience of an excel spreadsheet.

I am also making the punt that they might actually use Jacobs to open. That's the gist I am getting with where he would bat this year at Super Smash level. Unfortunately the Sri Lanka T20s come before ODIs, so he won't get a few SS games opening first.
