Only pick Latham to keep for the South African series if you have a sneaky plan that he's going to move down the order replacing Nicholls anyway, to make way for Rachin.

Otherwise yeah, just chose the best keeper out of Cleaver and Fletcher and bat them at 7.

Trying to imagine what the Test side would look like if NZ went full Bazball.

They would still pick Conway, Williamson and Mitchell. Ravindra and Allen would be in. Who else?

For the avoidance of doubt (and being called out for my moronic opinions again) this is not actually the side I would select for a test match.

Allen
Ravindra
Conway
Williamson
Mitchell
Santner
Seifert +
Smith
Jamieson
Southee
Sears
Surely Glenn Phillips should be there instead of Santa?

Could also see Macewell's career getting extended too, lol

Sort of proves my point doesn’t it.

Latham in two World Cup campaigns has never been able to score any runs while being the full time keeper. Has always been an average keeper at best whose keeping has really dropped away over the last 12-18 months. He routinely dropped or missed a stumping in just about every game during last years World Cup and yet no one even seemed to notice

Seifert on the the other hand misses a chance and we get half a dozen comments on how shoddy his keeping is.

Was nothing wrong with backing him 5-6 years ago. He was a 22-23 year old keeper averaging nigh on 40 in FC batting all over the order for ND and NZ A. That train stopped a good couple of years ago now, he’s gone backwards at a rate of knots. Isn’t even close to the player he was 5 years ago.

I don’t know who I’d get to fill in for Blundell now. Cleaver seems to have regressed the last couple of years and Fletcher hasn’t really kicked on either.

If anything people where overly harsh on Latham last WC IMO. He was doing well in the first ~5 games with a healthy SR, few 50's a d runs at a 40+ average but people where still criticizing him for every mistake.

Latham has to be it for the gloves, in the short term. Fletcher has fallen off a cliff, so has Cleaver, and Mitch Hay (love the bloke) is too early days, probably. Playing Latham with the gloves gets Ravindra in, or Young, or whoever it is, whilst picking another specialist keeper before their time diminishes our run output.

Looks like it'll only be for the SA series or maybe just the first Test with Blundell, hopefully.

Some words of wisdon from Stead to get us all fired up for the test matches this season:
He's always been like this. Some people have an energy about them, a postivity, a will and a way of finding how to get the best out of teams, how to man manage effectively etc. Gary Stead does not have this, in any capacity. He's the safest of safe, boring options - because most of the good options prefer T20 franchises or shorter-term gigs. Andy Moles would be genuinely envious of the era he's worked in - Stead would've been axed in a week during the late 00s.

That quote sucks. And it's not like as fans we go 'oh you're right Gary, if I look at the statistics here and think rationally, we can't win everything. But promise me you'll try!!!!' Lame. We have enough across the board now to think we can win every Test.

It would be handy way to get Ravindra in the 11. Ready to take over from he who we kid ourself "is just tired".

Because we will need him sooner than Stead/Wells think. Conway is shot. Won't be in the 11 by end of season.
You think Conway is cooked as a player, technically? And not good enough to rectify that?

Peeping the old cricinfo commentary of the 1999 semi:

10.3 the usual crappy lack of footwork from McMillan, trying to slap the ball into the covers, jumping as well, outside edge, easy keeper's catch 38/2

46.4 stepping back to make room, late cut just clips the off bail, Parore the goose doesn't realise and is still running the second, wondering why Pakistan are hugging in the middle of the pitch 211/7
