I saw him at a golf tournament a couple of years ago, he'd had a few. And when I say a few, I mean on the day and in general since he'd retired 30 years ago. I don't think he's up to it.
Was listening to him on Coney's show and the name was struck. You know whom I mean obviously his junior.

Young to #4, Hay to open is the obvious stopgap choice if they don't want to put Ravindra up there. Won't happen though, we'll get the India 2nd test **** again where the batting order is randomised.

I think Darryl Mitchell will come in for Kane at no.4 and the rest stay where they are with Rachin likely to come in at no.6 or 7. Right left combination right through.

Haha yep, sure is/was. Used to love playing Waitak, always a bit of niggle involved. We played a heap of T20, 50 over and two-day stuff against them
Ha Blair White in your face was he? I entered that side at 17, Anaru Kitchen, Dusan Hakaraia, Keeley Todd, Ronnie Hira and whole lot of bitter journeyman along the way haha I was the leggie.

Surprising Rutherford has made the cut ahead of Phillips. Very surprised at Tickener's inclusion. I'd have thought Duffy would have been ahead of him or even Ben Sears.

Cam Fletcher fully deserving cover for Blundell. Could have been either Cleaver or Cam.

Good to see CDG back. I don't quite rate his batting but he's definitely a good option to have and very handy bowler.

Boult is a massive gap to fill.

15 member squad for the first test only

Tom Latham (captain), Will Young, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell, Colin de Grandhomme, Rachin Ravindra, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Neil Wagner, Hamish Rutherford, Blair Tickner, Cam Fletcher

Worth pointing out that Boult is unavailable for the 1st test (paternity leave) and Ajaz has a calf injury. Shame because CDG could've batted 7 with Ajaz at 11.

Just as long as Kane is good to go for the crucial IPL season. Love watching him go round for the Sunricers.

Ideally he'll play Holland, play for the Sunricers, then sit out the England tour, and be good to go again for the 3 T20's against the Galapagos Islands.

I'm not sure why he's being criticized. The man has been struggling with his elbow for quite some time now. If his elbow recovers and has no other national commitments what's wrong in playing IPL? From what I've read his elbow requires rest and only recovers with rest.

I know he has to take a jab every time he has to go out to bat. That is terrible to say the least.

Hmm I'm not a big fan of the Tickner and Rutherford selections to be honest, and even Colin De Grandhomme. Rutherford is probably just a stop gap which is OK, but with age I would have thought a Chapman, Phillips or Cleaver (looking at the future) would have been a better option. Tickner doesn't float my boat, he seems like a fast bowler bowling 130km-135km. He's into the pitch, which I guess is why he's there? Otherwise Nathan Smith would have been a lock in as a swing bowler. Ferguson not up to it physically they reckon?

Colin hasn't been bowling at all, and that's the only reason why he's considered a test option. I guess he's fit enough to bowl 15 overs an innings?

Why not Ben Sears? The kid is a gun. Would have been an awesome addition and would have provided us 140+ bowler in the line up. I don't think Tickener is a starter and wouldn't have lost much if we had Sears in the squad. At least he would have spent time bowling in the nets and would have picked up few things.

I don't necessirrily have a problem with Rutherford but the selection of Phillips for the India tour and now Rutherford for SA series is a bit mystifying. Phillips weakness vs spin and Rutherford's weakness vs short stuff is well documented. I guess they have got it the wrong way around. Phillips could have been a decent pick given the South Africa bowlers are taller, hit the deck harder and generally tend to get the batters on the backfoot which is Phillips' batting USP.

Weirdest looking NZ test squad I've seen in a long time.

Rutherford not undeserving of being a fallback batting reserve, has lots of domestic runs, but he's still expected to nick off the same way he did in 2014 right?
Tickner has potential but can't operate under 'has potential' forever and would still expect him to spray it if he played for NZ.
Fletcher undoubtedly deserves to be there.

Both Rutherford and Tickner will likely be culled from the match-day squad anyway.

Also, with Boult missing that's awful timing for Ajaz to be injured - would've nicely rounded out the XI and the bowling attack with the three seamers + allrounder.

Colin hasn't bowled much in T20s in recent years anyway. I guess they don't want to shuffle Conway back to opening if Latham or Young can't play, so picked an experienced specialist opener in Rutherford.
