That must be the fifth or sixth article I've seen in the last couple of years about Southee working to improve his batting. Sounds good and all, but until I actually see evidence of him batting properly I'll remain fairly skeptical about how serious he is.
And agree; I'd rather he fixes his bowling than worry about scoring a few 30s and 40s.

I think I rate Jeetan both in terms of stroke play and temperament than Southee. So Tim has along way to go to be a good test match number 9. Trent Boult is better than him too.
That said I was proud of him for smoking a couple of fours in that Hobart test.
Even if he never gets back into the black caps side - I don't think he disgraced himself for New Zealand and at times made valuable contributions. I was always a fan of his. And I hope he can be reborn. I think he was doing particularly well with Alan Donald - and we should not have lost that coach.

Nah, he's not even close.
Even though Southee's batting has never really kicked on over the past four years he's still managed to average over 20 with the bat. Granted a lot of those runs have been scored in "lost causes" but it's still a fair effort IMO, especially for someone with zero technique and almost no ability in how to go about constructing an innings.
I've been saying it for years but there should be no reason why he shouldn't be averaging close to 30 for New Zealand in test cricket. Hopefully he's decided as much as well.
They're only media reports on what he's doing. Don't take it as gospel that he's in the nets for 3 hours working on his batting and one on his bowling. He knows the way to get back in the side is to prove his worth with the ball and that a new-ball spot may soon be opening when Martin retires.
Bracewell shouldn't be excused from a fair bit of batting practice either. He's a technically more capable batsman than Southee and probably hits it further too.

Well yeah, but there should be absolutely no reason why Southee can't improve both disciplines.

I believe the media get fed this sort of stuff ahead of time, so no reason to argue.
But Wagner at No.12? You'd have to be having a laugh. Based on all those times he has played for NZ, zero? Or maybe the fact he is only ever going to play one form for them?

And no sight of Wagner at all. Nice work Stuff. One article saying Wagner is at 12, the other saying Bennett is very unlucky to not get one. I don't know if they ever had standards but they are ever slipping by the day.
No real surprises here, I'd like to see Gillespie in there but he's been injury prone and apparently is injured now as well.

I went out to Wellington in 2008, might do the whole test tour this time. Anyone with any thoughts on the schedule as a whole and in particular the grounds at Dunedin(University Oval) and Auckland(Eden Park)?

Never been to University Oval, but it looks on TV like a lovely cricket ground with relatively long boundaries by NZ standards.
Eden Park is a terrific stadium - I'll probably go to both the T20 and ODI and have an awesome time in what should be really good crowds - but it's a terrible Test venue. The boundaries are short and quirky, and the maybe 5000-odd crowd will get lost in the massive stands. I wish they'd play the Test somewhere else.

Uni Oval is a beautiful ground. So easy to get to, picturesque, not really a bad seat in the house.
It will be very interesting as to how the Eden Park Test goes. I'm excited about one being in Auckland though, which is ridiculous when considered I live in the country's most populated city. It's actually crazy.

Definitely think one of Gillespie or Wagner should have received a contract over one of our limited overs allrounders - surely we don't need all of Oram, Franklin and Ellis.
