Tour de France

I think it might be a ploy to take the pressure off one of the other Disco guys, Hincapie has never done anything great in the mountains (Stage last year doesn't count, in a breakaway with 'stage-hunters' doing little work since Lance was leading the GC).

Hincapie has always been a pretty good rider, look at his record on the cobbled classics (his biggest win there is Ghent-Wevelgem), very unlucky not to have won Paris-Roubaix or the Tour of Flanders in his career, 2007 would probably be his last chance to win and I think we are going to see an Armstrong-esque style domination of Flanders by Tom Boonen.

Cobblestones aside, he has been a good time-trialist, and has been good on the lower parts of the climbs or the shorter hills, and he started off his career as mainly a sprinter, and IMO if he had left US Postal (before they came Discovery) he could (actually I will say would) of been a team leader at a lot of teams for the Tour and his pet races in Belgium and Northern France.

This sprint finish was one of the most exciting I have seen for a long time, with some many guys capable of winning (think Valverde was looking at having a crack as well).

Will be interesting to see if the breakaway happens on the first or 2nd category 3 or if it's before then. Either way, there's certain to be as, like I said, it's one of the days that I can definitely see it succeeding.

O'Grady might just be in it. He's never been one to go for them and can sprint so it's bbviously unlikely. But it wouldn't be a bad move for him to try and get in one if he isn't watched too closely by Disco (Geez I get sick of saying that every year!).

Liquigas team leader Danilo Di Luca was a non starter on Stage 2 with an inflamed and infected prostate - ouch!

Great stage.

Shame Kessler didn't get there but the sprinters, and particularly McEwen, timed it perfectly. I didn't see Robbie AT ALL until the last 5 metres or so. Thought he must have been caught up in the crash. Just has such a great habit of turning up out of nowhere.

O'Grady had a good ride as well, just went a bit too early with Boonen and you don't want to do that with McEwen on your wheel. Good to see Thor back in the yellow though. The intermediate sprints probably had some bearing on the final sprint, as McEwen blew them away.

Euskatel are having a good tour with their guys getting in the breaks, and having a guy in the top 10 in yeasterday's sprint.

It was earlier this year they were rumoured to be under pressure from the backers of the team - Eusko Alderdi Jeltzalea (EAJ) (thanks wiki) - the Basque Nationalist Party unless their results or at least picked up their act. Maybe only hiring Basques might have something to do with it.

How big has been the reaction in Norway Hak with Thor's success so far?

I know cycling > football > winter sports (you know skiing, biathlon, skating etc. you live there), but this mark some sort of positive response?

How do you like my new avatar Andy?

I think tonight's stage will be the one for the breakaway, but I would have to tip Oscar Feriere or Ajelandro Valverde (if he is willing to have a go) as it would probably suit them more, and more so for Feriere because Rabobank really want this stage win. Or Tom Boonen might be a chance.

There are three Cat. 3 climbs and 3 Cat. 4 climbs so it will be hardy to keep the break in check, and I think the break will consist the likes of Frank Schlek (he did win Amstel Gold and he is a class act), maybe Jens Voight or Stuart O'Grady (they probably will let him go), and of course at least either (or all) Michael Boogred, Erik Dekker, and or Juan Antonio Flecha, or the fourth name would be Peiter Weening (who won a stage last year by about 10mm) and their might be a few guys from Euskatel might get in there since it could suit them.

Looks good to me Craigos :D

Your hate runs deep. ;)
True :p

I prefer him to Boonen. Also I didn't want him to lose it because of the damn crowd, although he was ridign too close to the barriers.

Actually, at present, it's cycling = football >>>>>> winter sports (naturally, it's July). National free-to-air channel TV2 have been covering the Tour since 2003, so there's quite a significant part of the population who only care about cycling when the Tour is on ;) I'd say the Tour and the Eliteserien (our football league) is the top sports events in Norway in July.

Cauberg finish today should be interesting. One thing's for sure - no Crédit Agricole involvement.

Great stage today - good call on the Voigt breakaway, and well done Kessler for making up for yesterday's near-miss.

I've just taken my own advice and put money on Cadel - shame it's taken until he fell to 6/1 to do so!

Yep top stage.

Congrats to Kessler, certainly deserved it. I thought Rogers had a great ride, didn't expect to see him there at all! Anyway was a very interesting finish.

Feel very sorry for Dekker (probably in his last tour) and Valverde. Valverde was definitely one of the guys tipped to win it and he certainly has the talent.

Time trial will be interestign with Rogers 1" off the Yellow :-O

I think Rogers will have a very good chance now of getting yellow in the time trial since their is no point in him getting time bonuses out on the course (and Boonen would probably beat him in the sprint anyway) as well as the obvious waste of enegry.

I'm glad Matthias Kessler won the stage - at first you don't succeed, try again (or keep on trying). Kessler has always had the ability to achieve good results, but has always IMO lacked confidence in himself, and maybe who knows?

I'm gutted that Ajelandro Valverde is out, I really am, he has been in such good form this year, having making the breakthrough in the victory's in the Ardennes Classics, and this unfortunate accident after touching somebody's wheel. I have no idea though when Stuart O'Grady crashed though(think it was when Valverde went down). Similar thoughts go to Erik Dekker and Freddy Rodriguez as well. Apart from being an important lead-out man for McEwen, he is a quality sprinter himself, and on another team he could be the man going for the stage wins except leading somebody else out.

For me a good dark horse could be Paolo Savoldelli of Dsicovery. He can time trial just as well as anybody else can in the race (or good enough so he doesn't lose huge chunks of time like Cunego would), he can climb well, although he struggles on the real steep climbs, and can descend brilliantly. Plus he has won two Giro's ,so he has experience in the Grand Tour winning buisness, and the Giro course is often harder then the Tour won (some of the climbs were so steep they would never have them in the Tour), and he won it last year with a 'B' squad, and had to fend for himself in the Alps and Dolomites and he survived.

O'Grady ran wide on a corner and was holding it together freewheel on the grass, until he ran out of grass and found a ditch. Fourth vertebrae fractured - tour over as far as being a serious contender goes.

Phenomenal effort from McEwen in the sprint today, just blew them away by 20m+ - I'm enjoying this tour more than ever before. Who needs the big guns?

Craig, any thoughts on Damiano Cunego in terms of the GC?
