Top Spinners to Debut in the 21st Century

Think he has 6 actually
Only had a quick scan, you're probably right. I just find it odd that a fella with his record (you can chuck in a couple of World Cups too) is not even given a mention. He split opinion in England for the latter part of his career, but when he was good, was very good.

A few diamonds, but a lot of rocks.

Moeen was okay, and I really mean that, okay bowler, okay batsmen, okay fielder, okay guy, everything about his career as a cricketer was "okay".

And yet, every now and then, he smashed it.

Interesting comparison is Shakib (69), who has played 1 more Test than Moeen (68). They have the same number of MOTM awards. Nathan Lyon only has 5 and has played 129 Tests.

Allrounders are more likely to win motm awards though.

4 of Moeen's were for pretty much bowling only though.

More than that, it's that you're more likely to win motm if you're on the winning team and shakib's team isn't exactly going to win a lot of games (except against Pakistan) no matter how well he plays.
This is true. But then looking at the locations he plays, he won those 4 at Lord's, Southampton, Manchester and Durban. He's also played his entire career with 2 of the top wicket takers of all time on pitches that didn't often help spin. You could argue his opportunities weren't great either.

Funny to see how he loved playing India in Southampton though!!

he was an impact player entirely, just very inconsistent, overall he was a decent cricketer for us

But, when they do win matches, there's less competition for the MOTM award.
MOTM is not a great way to judge an impact of a player, it's highly subjective ..take Joe Root for example second test vs Sri lanka, a hundred in both innings and didn't get MOM , pretty sure he got a lot of MOM'S in his career doing far less..

Another example , Shakib once scored a double hundred vs NZ and took 2 wickets but because his side lost the match it went to Tom Latham for scoring 177 , the funny thing is that 177 came in NZ's first innings which was less than what Bangladesh got in their first dig 🤣.

Must be tough work to be a spinner and get MOTM
I know a fella who once took 10 Indian wickets in an innings and didn't get it.

Moeen took 8 wickets in the match against India at Southampton in 2014, including 6-67 in the 4th innings to bowl England to victory, and somehow Anderson got MOTM with only 7 match wickets.

I was more making the point that Moeen had the ability to win matches for England with his bowling. It's kind of forgotten that when he was good, he was actually very good and deserves a mention in this list.
