Top 5 Batting/Bowling For Your Life List

Well, if your life depended on it, stakes are high, of course, who would you give the bat/ball to?

Include Bradman if you wish, but I think he is an automatic choice really, so I am not going to mention him in my list. I also don't really mind which form of the game you are talking about, mine might have a mix.

Batting:
1) Bevan - Saved Australia so many times in ODI. batting to the end. it is quite ridiculous.
2) Gavaskar - He was India. They say he was selfish, but it only benefited his country. In a time where talent was abundant in the opposition, it was not as much in his side.
3) Border - Much like Gavaskar, he was Australia, enough said.
4) Richards - This might be a controversial choice given his method of batting. But I feel that when it really mattered he made those huge scores and could take on all-comers.
5) Lara - I was going for Waugh but I decided not to. Thinking of a situation where I only had one batsman and I needed a big score, I'd shade it to Brian Charles Lara.

Bowling:
1) Warne - The King, the genius. Had the will to turn a match on will alone, but the majesty and command of his craft meant it was never a blind shot in the dark.
2) Lillee - Like Warne, his heart was big and where he differs is that he had to get over the physical aspect of the game. His discipline requires much more of that physique than Warne's, and so it was quite amazing to see him pummel into the opposition all day as hard as he could, injured or otherwise.
3) Akram - Not so much for his heart or things of that nature, although he had it, but because his supreme skill meant he was a danger to the opposition, all the time. I don't think I've said "Wow, that was close" as many times for other bowlers as I have for Wasim.
4) McGrath - Not a choice I pick because I think he'll bring a dramatic turn around but because he won't. His bowling will more than not put you in a position of calm. A safe bet.
5) Khan - I pick Imran because simply...he is Imran. He is one of those players whose influence goes past his own efforts. He makes others play better.

Warne makes sense, he was always most dangerous when the match seemed to be slipping away,

Imran Khan for his bowling too, he was a big match player and he raised his game whenever the challenge was bigger, opposition was stronger and conditions tougher.

I would also pick Marshall and Akram, as they had the skill, tenacity and variety to make a difference anywhere and everwhere.

My last option would be Courtney Walsh. Ambrose was perhaps better, but for some reason I think Walshbent his back a bit more in those pressure moments.

Batting-wise, I pick Bevan (for oneday matches), Javed Miandad, Brian Lara, Sunil Gavaskar and Steve Waugh (a shade ahead of Border).

(Bradman automatic pick)
Hammond
Gavaskar
Hobbs

Tried to exclude people with a lot of ducks, so threw Atherton and S Waugh out of the window.

Trueman
Hoggard (cos I would trust him with anything)
Donald
Muralitharan
Marshall

McGrath's bowled 10+ overs wicketless 29 times. (And yes, I know that stat can be explained, but there are so many good bowlers and I love Hoggard.)

Batting
1. Bradman - he'll score any way
2. Viv Richards - usually fires, if fires, never mind the opposition
3. Jack Hobbs - If you've picked Bradman, this man should be an automatic choice, he'll as the opener will play mighty long innings
4. Lara - if you are in a soup, this man acn single handedly score even with the tail
5. Jayasuriya - Doesn't matter who's with him at the other end, when set will blast the opposition out.

Bowling
1. Marshall - premier fast bowler in test cricket, complete fast bowler, van bowl at any condition and produce that magic ball at any time.
2. Muraitharan - premier spinner in test cricket, when he's in the mood gets wickets in a glut. Best in the business keeping the runs down.
3. Akthar - when you need that simply unplayabale ball to the best set batsman, this man is the one turn to. He has bowled most unplayable balls to set batsman than any other bowler IMO.
4. McGrath - wicket taker and a stock bowler in combination. Nails them regularly and keeps getting wickts also
5. Ian Botham - if you need that tryer who is willing to toil to produce that magic ball to start a collapse, this is the man to look for.

I think regardless of draw or win, a dire situation is a dire situation. Ponting in 05 Ashes, a draw but damn that was amazing.

I think I've left it pretty open to interpretation considering I have both Gavaskar AND Richards in batting and in bowling I could have easily put Murali down there too. I guess that's what's interesting about it. What is a 'dire' situation to some people? Is it defined in a certain period of time? Are the needs the same?
