Whats the story behind it?
It wasn't against the rules.

The only way Somerset could not progress was if they lost heavily and another team won in a different game.

The calculations meant that by declaring after one over Somerset would be guaranteed to go through.

The captain asked the authorities in advance if it was legal, to which they replied "yes, but there will be repercussions".

Somerset were subsequently kicked out of the contest by a 17-1 vote against them. Curiously they voted against themselves and it was only Derbyshire that voted to keep them in the competition.

Most disgraceful moment in cricket? Really???

How about match-fixing or drug-taking? The 2007 World Cup. Some perspective please.

It was completely legal at the time so this is a bit of a whinge about nothing. It is about on a par with Ranatunga getting a runner for being a bit tired or batsman backing up a long way because they know that the bowler cannot mankad them. A bit annoying and you feel it should not be allowed somehow but nothing to get too wound up about.
This was the defining moment in my love to hate attitude towards the Aussie cricket team.

Anyways I found your contribution added to the thread. If everyone had've condemned the act it wouldn't have been much fun.

@NZT - the moment has passed now obviously - at the time it probably did wonders for one day cricket in NZ. Certainly mesmerized me towards the game.
