But then again, you dont drop your best batsman to give a newbie a chance...

Oh well. He's been mistreated by the selectors, and now they can't turn back to him if they drop one of their middle order bats. Serves them right.

He is just saving himself an announcement in a few weeks time.

Sad to see him go though.

As I said in the Ashes thread, great batsmen and will be obviously be missed in the English camp.

At least his last innings was a cosy not out against Bangladesh while Gower's ended in a low total (bowled by Waqar Younis IIRC).

Goodbye internationals for the Thorpedo of the England team, marvellous career, England would have been glad to bring him on board for the 2nd test. All the best mate.

Good player but its time to move on.

Thorpe was never 100% committed but was a big part of the recent England success.

That's bad news for all English cricket fans. Think he's been a little bit previous judging by our first innings effort. There again, there may be an element of the "up yours" in the timing of his announcement.

Great servant whose career nudged greatness at times. He was certainly the English batter of his generation.

not really surprising, whos the backup now should one of the english middle order fail or get injured?

this was expected, well its just just Gough left from the England's `Generation of the 90's` and his future doesn't look to hot either....
