Well the rankings thing for mine is as much if not more to do with the fact that quite a few teams have suddenly become quite good again all at once. The gap between 2nd and 5th is very very small.
I think the gap between 1 and 5 is small. This last series was 1 v 5 with 1 at home and they hardly thrashed you did they.

I personally think there is little to choose between them and the Aussie side of 2000-2007 would have wiped the floor with all the current top 5 sides.

The main worry for Australia isn't the bowling in my opinion as all the sides in the top 5 have weaknesses in that department,it is the fact the batting is collapsing on a more regular basis that would be a concern.Though as an Englishman i hope it carries on for at least 5 more tests.

Check the latest Victorian scorecard. Ricardo Powell could never play an innings quite like the one played by McDonald.
Haha actually, if there's one thing Ricardo Powell could do, it was play an innings like that once every five years.

That's true but IIRC there's about 8 points between India and SA and another 8 between SA and Aus/Eng.

And you're absolutely right that it's batting collapses which are our concern.

Hasn't really happened at home much.

Yet.

Though last summer for you you were pushed by very ordinary West Indies and Pakistan sides which would have been beaten in 3 days every test in the days of Warne and McGrath and the previous year South Africa beat you.

Happened enough TBH. Both innings Sydney, 2nd innings Perth... that one was against Dwayne Bravo, too. Hobart was definitely on the cards if Ponting had holed out.

Deadset, just reminded of just how moronic that Perth collapse was. Asif, Aamer I could understand. Anderson in England in swinging conditions I can understand. Zaheer and Harbhajan with an old ball on a 4th day Indian pitch I can understand. Hell even the NZ attack on an overcast day I can sort of understand. But Dwayne ****ing Bravo, on a bright and sunny day, on a flat deck, inducing a massive collapse doing nothing more than bowling way wide of off stump to a 7-2 or 8-1 field? FFS.

Yes, yes they are.

I agree with the OP. Time for the Aussies to throw in the towel and focus their energies on sports they are actually good at, preferably ones which the rest of the world doesn't play so they can't embarass themselves anymore.

The one I like most TBH is population per medal:

Australia 134,810
England 401,953

So by an objective analysis that makes one Australian worth four Englishmen

Most of the top talent didn't bother going,Brit cyclists,Jamaican athletics team etc...

We were above Australia in the last Olympics and will be again in 2012.
