The counter argument to playing out the back is that if your keeper hoofs it long, the opposition might do a smart control, and hit a half volley from about the center circle that will hilariously bounce over your keeper... so better to try and pass it around the back???The counter argument

I scored a goal like that once - tried to volley a cross field pass to a team-mate that went very badly wrong and turned out to be a high hoof directly at the goalkeeper. (I was just inside the left touchline and was trying to pick out a team-mate in the right wing position for a bit of context as to how woefully inaccurate my attempted pass was.)
My annoyance at a shite pass soon turned to delight when the keeper misjudged the flight of the ball and it bounced over him and into the net.

Only just seen that, an absolute thing of beauty. The keeper telegraphing the pass to a marked player, then trying to make a block whilst standing 5 yards out of his area is stupendous. I'm wondering if they stick with the manager, he's so one dimensional and it clearly won't work with these players in the Prem.
